Help! My mare keeps getting cast in her run in!

Kathi.duvall@...

My mare is recovering from founder so I have her in a 16 ft by 24 ft enclosed run in. The back half is enclosed with corral panels. The first time it happened was last Thursday evening and I found her Friday morning. She managed to push herself away enough to get up. It happened again overnight last night and of course she was still down when I got there this morning. This time she was more panicked but somehow got herself up after some scary attempts. She got a nasty abrasion on one knee and it’s a little puffy. I am terrified to keep her in there tonight! I am going to let her out with the others in a small field behind the run ins. Not much grass in there but there is some. I just don’t know what else to do! Has anyone experienced this?

Hi Kathi,

Is your mare IR or PPID?  If she is IR and has laminitis relating to her diet putting her out where there's grass could be a real setback for her.  Can you block the corral panels with pieces of wood so she isn't able to put her legs through them?

In a pinch I've gone to Lowe's or Home Depot and picked up a couple panels of the cheapest stockade fence they have and attached it to the pipe panels with u shaped clamps, or I've zip tied heavy gauge woven wire fencing to the panels.  Having a cast equine is the worst.  I use pipe type panel gates inside my barn, but I've switched to the wire filled versions because I'm so worried about the boys getting a leg through them by accident.  They're expensive, but the peace of mind is worth it.

Hi Kathi,

My gelding got his leg caught in a round pen panel when he needed restricted activity due to a lameness issue. I used a roll of non-climb woven fence along the inside perimeter of the panels that kept it from happening again. Hope this helps and good luck!

Thank you all for these great ideas. Going to work on the one corral panel that could be a problem. Anyone ever find something that works inside the stall to discourage them from laying too close to the wall? Obviously that would have to be something they couldn’t hurt themselves on.

My mare didn’t leave her run in last night but she also did not lay down at all.

Banking shavings along the stall walls has been the best solution to my mare's tendency to cast. Hope you have luck finding solutions. It's very scary when they are stuck.

Thank you Liz for that suggestion! I am doing that today!!! Safe and easy. Hopefully it will help her. It is terrifying. I didn’t sleep last night for worrying, and went out to the barn with a sick feeling this morning but she never laid down last night at all, which also isn’t ideal.

Kathi- My horse isn't casting himself, rather he's been walking along one fence line, creating a deep path.  So I took some large plastic barrels and tied them to some of the posts.   This is keeping him off the fence line.

Hi Kathi,

You can bank shavings along the stall walls - it's not an ideal solution as some of them insist on laying next to the wall no matter what, but it may help.  There also used to be anti-cast rollers...but apparently there's not a big market for them in America as all the retailers I found were in the UK or Australia. Anti-cast strips seem to be more popular here - https://www.statelinetack.com/item/up-right-anti-cast-safety-strips-black-36in/BRS70/

You could also run a board horizontally along the wall about for feet up. Allows them to get purchase and push themselves over. We’ve had some horses who excel at casting themselves.

I know that feeling of anxiety when going to the barn in the morning! My mare also has a colic and choke history. Casting herself was the last straw! We installed a Barncam so that I can check horses from the house. They're a little pricey, but nice to have. My brother is having great luck with the Blink outdoor rated camera. They're about $100 on Amazon and can be viewed on a phone.

Sorry for the extra reply... Forgot to mention that we also put up the casting strips on the stall walls. A neighbor had luck with them. My mare still got stuck with her front leg forearms against the wall and was scrambling so frantically with hinds that she wasn't gaining purchase against the strips.

It’s easy to put up a single strand of electric tape 12 inches inside all fences.  It’s not ideal, but it will keep her away from that fence.

There are also anti cast surcingles available. I don’t have any personal experience or know how well they work. Maybe others can chime in if they have tried it.
