testing pellets

LJ Friedman

this year I will have about one years hey to test for Majestic. For Jesse since he eats only Timothy pellets the barn usually only buy bags monthly, and the barn sometimes switches suppliers which I don’t think I like. I’m thinking I can ask them to use just one provider. Would that be helpful to ensure a consistent supply even though lots might be different as the barn will not purchase a years worth of pellets  at one time, but does it usually monthly?

The best thing for Jesse would be the OD  timothy balance cubes - then you know they're safe and already balanced.  Supplier isn't really the issue with the timothy pellets - it's batch differences whether the same or different supplier. The Standlee teff pellets are not guaranteed safe but your odds of getting low S/S should be more favorable. You will still have the different mineral profiles and protein levels between batches.

Do you happen to know if the Semican Timothy Pellets are generally safe as a carrier ?? I reached out to them and they told me that the NSC is 9.5%

Michelle, I should think that Dr. Kellon’s response to LJ would be the same for you as well.  That’s an average figure so you may well find differences between batches.  I heartily recommend the ODTBC as they make things so much easier.  If, by carrier, you mean half a handful it might not be too important.

Thank you for replying about Standlee  When I askbthe barn owner to use only standlee pellets for their consistency, what can I tell her that makes ita better choice than Mt. sunrise or some of the other brands? I ask because Majestic gets almost 10 pounds of Timothy pellets in addition to his hay so I would like that to be consistent even if I switch Jesse over to the balance cubes. If the cubes don’t work because of quidding etc. I would like to exclusively get the Standlee pellets but would prefer some data to back up my request to bo for standlee only with a reason to use stsndlee as only supplier   thanks

The Standlee won't be any  more consistent batch to batch than Mt  Sunrise but because they are Teff instead of Timothy they are more likely (but not guaranteed) to be on the low end for sugar and starch.  You're still better off with the OD Cubes for both horses.

Hi ..I had been feeding the ODTBC but with my newest bag that I opend my horse didn’t want to eat them for some reason?? So I happened to have Timothy pellets on hand and he’s eating them no problem ...I give 1/2 lb (measured in one of those feed measuring cups) to carry his Vermont Blend, Flax, & Vitamin E.

-- Thanks for the reply. I think i must be having a miscommunication, because I don’t remember ever mentioning using teff pellets instead of Timothy? So could you remind me of the change over to teff? Is that something you’re suggesting ? Thanks

What about ODT pellets?
They are not guaranteed to be under 10% ESC+ Starch, but generally are.

Aurelio? Hope I've got that right?

help me with your reply that the OD cubes would be better for both horses. If I were to switch Majestic over from Timothy pellets to the OD cubes, how would I balance  his Timothy hay? Now, I mix his custom supplements in  withthe Timothy pellets. And those custom supplements do cost three dollars a day. It makes financial sense to consider a switch over for a Jesse because I won’t need A custom supplement, but I will still have to add a custom supplement to the OD cubes for Majestic and his Timothy hay. and majestic currently gets aprox 10 lbs of pellets per day in addition to the hay

Edited

ODT = Ontario Dehy Timothy pellets. These are not mineral balanced, just another source of a plain timothy hay pellet.

Why does Majestic need 10lbs of timothy pellets per day in addition to his hay?

The amount of custom supplement you feed should be linked to how much hay he is eating.  If you are feeding 10 lbs of timothy pellets, those should be balanced to their analysis as well or his diet is not balanced.

The hays and beet pulp going into ODTB cubes are always below 10% - usually well below.

The pellets I mentioned to you were Teff.

thank you for your question. There was a time when Majestic was leaving over 20 to 25% of the Timothy hay because it was so so quality so I added the pellets  to make up for that. I’ve always used 4 pounds of pellets to mix the supplements in and additional 6 pounds was to offset the hay  he was leaving over. Now that he has improved because the mixing Orchard  with the Timothy, but he still gets those pellets and his weight is fine.

When I feed Timothy hayvand Timothy pellets I do use the custom supplement for the complete amount of hay and pellets he is  eating for the day.

Ontario Dehy Timothy pellets.
Just timothy, no minerals or beet pulp.

I just mentioned them in case budget is of concern, because they are less expensive than the ODTBC. Not sure how they compare in price to what you have been feeding.

Yes, but your custom only matches the hay analysis, not the pellets.
