If you use a powdered vitamin E you should mix it into oil before feeding to improve absorption.  Many people just use human gelcaps of vitamin E in oil (not in glycerin).

Dr. Kellon, what is the concern with feeding the human Vit E gelcaps made of glycerin? I didn't know this was bad, and have been feeding the Nature's Bounty brand of Vit E gelcaps for months now.

Allison, I don’t think the glycerin is harmful but vitamin E still needs oil for best absorption.  You would need to add oil along with those gel caps.  Most suppliers sell gel caps with oil and well as gel caps with glycerin.  You just need to be careful about which one you choose.  This is what I use and it contains soybean oil as well as glycerin.  Maybe yours has both as well?  The glycerin acts as a plasticizer, which probably makes it a preservative of sorts.

I use Equimins vitamin E oil, it works out way cheaper than the human capsules - although they are clean and convenient.  I mix 20g into 10 days worth of linseed then it's easy to dose accurately - otherwise it's very sticky and almost impossible to measure accurately!
Progressive Earth and Forage plus do vit E in silica - easy t dose but you'd need to add oil

I use a powdered Vit E from Pure Bulk and I did call them about needing oil.  They said the oil that is in the cup of ground flax seed that I also give them provides more than enough oil to make the E bioavailable.

Linda,

That's only likely true if you feed nothing but the flax with the E.

This is a perfect example of how we often get incorrect information from suppliers. When we bring our comments to the group ,we get the actual way it works in real life.

Thank you Dr. Kellon.  I am checking further into this.  I never tried to feed whole capsules... thought they would eat better if powdered.  Also, when figuring the cost of the capsules, the least expensive are the DL-Alpha tocopheral which is the synthetic version... the D-Alpha tocopheral is the natural vitamin E and I was told that with the synthetic vit E one only gets about 1/2 the nutrients... that you have to take the natural E to get it all.  Do you know about this?

Hi Linda,

I used to feed my herd of 10 the capsules in their feed. Just tossed them in. No objections voiced.

I use human capsules too. If he doesn’t eat them at breakfast- I just puncture it at dinner time and put it on his handful of stuff I use for his Prascend in the evening

I use ones from Walmart, 1000 iu, d-alpha form and 60 capsules are about $8.

Jewel is fussy and sniffed out the vitamin e capsules immediately! I toss them in now with her soaked hay cubes and salt which is pre prepared the night before.  Capsules partially dissolve before she eats her cubes and tada!
I buy the vit e at walmart here in Canada. Cheap and encapsulated in oil already.

I'm not sure if this has been answered already, but I believe the available Vit E listed on the synthetic capsules takes the difference between natural and synthetic E into account.   There have been messages over the years here stating that using the synthetic is ok.   I throw a couple extra in the feed tub as insurance, but that's just me.🙂.  I use the 400 size (with oil) and Chappie eats them in his bucket meal.

Oh wow!  Thank you again, Dr. Kellon... I've always been suspicious of the synthetic E and now it makes sense.

What do you mean you’ve been suspicious of vitamin  E synthetic? What makes sense now?

Have you read all the posts in this thread, LJ?    Her suspicion was only that the synthetic E wouldn't be as potent as the natural.   I answered that the available Vit E listed on the label  takes into account the difference between synthetic and natural E.  Dr Kellon validated that, which is what "makes sense".
