Vitamin E and oil
That seems appropriate to me, but I defer to Dr Kellon's opinion.

Happy Holidays, Kirsten and Dr. Kellon
I have been looking for the Vit.E product.
I have found one, Canadian product ingredient list is
DL Alpha Tocopherol Acetate
Flavouring Agent Reg# 981203
DF&C Red#3
recommended dose is 20gr daily (equals 10,000IU)
If this is an acceptable content, I am feeding only 4 gr = 2000 IU, daily.

Hi Kandace,
This link was shared recently by Sherry, it is very informative, especially the last section on supplement recommendations: https://cvm.msu.edu/research/faculty-research/comparative-medical-genetics/valberg-laboratory/selecting-a-vitamin-e-supplement#-8.-what-are-current-recommendations-for-supplementation?

Specifically,
Current NRC daily recommendations for vitamin E in horses are 1 -2 IU/kg body weightSo a 450kg/1000lb [healthy] horse should get 450-900 IU/day. And,
The National Research Council (NRC) has set the upper safe diet concentration at 20 IU/kg of body weight, which is based on biopotency of synthetic vitamin E (10,000 IU/500 kg horse).Because vit E is an important antioxidant and because the unsafe dosage is quite high, I personally would double it for a PPID horse as well. But, to see if your horses have enough circulating vit E or if they would benefit from increased supplementation, you could look in to their blood tested. Instructions are in the above link, although it sounds like getting an accurate result might be difficult. It is expensive to supplement and excess amounts (if not needed) aren't necessarily better.

Kandace,
I was responding to Cheryl's question. Most vitamin E either capsules or powder is in a stabilized form, usually alpha-tocopherol acetate. That should retain its potency under the conditions she described - although I wouldn't be as confident in hot weather. An option would be to let the capsules sit in distilled water overnight then add that right before feeding.

Sorry Dr. Kellon,
Which E are you referring to here, the one in the vit/mineral mix or the seperate vit.E only in powder. Sometimes the threads get cross-wired.
Thanks.

Kirsten,
So my EMS or IR/PPID horse needs the 1600-2000IU/day and my PPID only needs 800-1000IU/day? It seems to me I have seen that brand at eithr Greenhawk or my, relatively, local feed store.

Kandace, I bought the one with just vitE. It's like a granular powder. I priced it out and it is the same as ordering powdered E from My Best Horse in the US, once the exchange rate and shipping is accounted for. I have found human capsules to be a lot more expensive than powdered E so I only use them for pre-mixing supplement baggies for when I am away (although I don't live near Costco where I understand you can get a good deal on capsules...plus my horse would sometimes spit them out and they'd be wasted).
A full size EMS horse should get 1600-2000IU/day, in general. Some people feed more but that's already double the requirement of a non-EMS horse.

If the E is in a stablized form, usually an acetate, that should be OK.

Camelina has too high an omega-6:omega-3 ratio. The other oils you mentioned are OK but MUCH more expensive than flax and no better

Check out FAQ : https://www.ecirhorse.org/FAQ.php
What is it about Camelina oil that makes it not appropriate as an omega 3 source for horses? How about perilla oil? sachi inchi oil? and ahiflower oil?

I currently feed vitamin e capsules in oil but it is pre mixed with her wet hay cubes the night before, hence the capsules have expanded and all that is all that is left . The inner contents have been absorbed into the cubes. Is this still effective.
Jewel wont take them in their whole form.

Any oil will enhance vitamin E absorption. Degradation occurs from heat, oxygen, exposure to other elements, not from mixing in oil. Camelina oil is not an appropriate omega-3 source for horses. Use flax or Chia.

Also Kirsten,
Which Vit. E powder from Brubacher's? I saw several, but only one, I think Basic Nutrition or Basic something seemed to be just E, others all had Selenium which My Mad Barn AT+ will already have and that is not one to have too much of, correct?

I have been considering switching from ground Flax to Camellina oil for the omega's. Would it be a suitable oil for mixing in a powdered Vit. E? Also if you use human capsules, how many do the horses need? And if I am understanding, the powdered vit. E only begins to degrade once the oil has been added? IE Mad Barns

Hi Kandace,
Mad Barn mixes their vit E with oil prior to pelletizing, BUT as Dr. Kellon says there is no guarantee that the vit E hasn't degraded.
Instead, you can add it from human-grade capsules with oil already in them, or you can buy a powdered vit E (Brubacher Harness has one in Canada; My Best Horse in the US also sells a powder) then mix the powder with a small amount of oil to wet it before putting it in the feed bowl.
This recent message thread mentions a few more products but I don't know if they are available in Canada. https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/topic/78807141#258593

Kandace,
I generally don't count vitamin E that is in feeds or multi ingredient supplements because it degrades quickly. Add it separately.

Hello all,
If your horses vit.E is in the form of pellets or powder and they need it in oil to make it digestable, what do you use?
I have received Mad Barn AT+ and am about to start this well recommended supplement to my horses (PPID & PPID/IR).
Thanks
