Nitrates in water

Philippa <10wilson.p@...>

Just wondering if anyone knows if high nitrate levels in drinking water can cause laminitis?

Thanks.

Hi Philippa
Have you had the water tested? What was the result? I found this message in our sister group on nitrates in equine forages (you can join to view the files here: https://groups.io/g/Equinenitrates

“Evaluation of Water Quality and Nutrition for Dairy Cattle
https://msu.edu/~beede/dairycattlewaterandnutrition.pdf

See the discussion and Table 5 on page 9.
Is it shown as
Nitrate (NO3)
or Nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N)?  which has a lower threshold.

Either way, the 19 ppm would be considered safe for ruminants and cows are considered to be more susceptible.
If in doubt (i.e. untested hay, hay/pasture irrigated with processed water) double the NRC level of iodine. “

If you’re concerned about nitrates I recommend joining that group, there is a lot of good information there.

Thank you Maxine for the information.

Our water was tested about 2 years ago & it came back with a nitrate reading of 16. We haven’t had it tested this year but we currently have a sick puppy whose nitrate levels are the second highest the vet clinic has ever seen, so I’m wondering if it’s affecting my donkeys as well. We will get it tested again to see if it has shot up even higher!

 Thanks again.

Oh and the nitrate is recorded as ‘Nitrate - nitrogen (NO3-N)’.

That's equivalent to a nitrate reading of 70.9, which is very high. Young animals are the most susceptible but definitely high enough to also affect adults - thyroid as mentioned and it deprives tissues of adequate oxygen. Exercise intolerance is common in working horses. There are no formal reports with laminitis that I know of but many reports from owners.

Thank you, Dr Kellon. It's scary stuff! Removal from the water doesn't appear to be easily achieved either!
