Itchy skin

In a recent thread, Dr. K invited me to post pictures of Oden's itchy skin. I just posted pictures labeled Itch 1-10. All you can see are small black dots. (Plus, I posted a picture of his scaly tail bone and his whole tail so you can see his tail isn't pulled out.)
These dots do not wiggle. They are not fleas or lice. I've never seen a tick on him. The black dots are not attached to his skin or hair. His skin is not lacerated, but his hair is often scored from his rubbing. It seems the more I brush, the more of these dots I can brush up. The more of these I see, the itchier he is. If I see him rubbing, invariably, I will find black dots in that spot. He is itchy year round, and has been for many years. He is much less itchy now than he was before we started feeding the ECIR diet. (He eats Triple Crown Balance Cubes, salt, Vit. E, flax, chondroitin, spirulina, MovEase, and Alcar.) We have done allergy testing (skin test) and allergy shots for more than a year. This did not help. I'd love to have your thoughts. Cindy, do you have a high resolution digital camera that can shoot on macro mode? Sometimes dark spots aren't the mite or other insect itself but instead mite (or other insect) frass. To know if these are insects or arachnids (mites), you need to see legs or eyes. They don't have to be clear. The scaly tailbone looks like what I used to see on one of my old ponies years ago. I was told to treat it with mineral oil with a small amount of liquid ivermectin mixed in. It worked. I was keeping a friends horse over the winter and she looked to have the same problem. I couldn’t remember how much ivermectin to add so I just used the mineral oil. It helped a lot but not as impressive as the oil/ivermectin mix. Parasites can’t move when the oil is generously rubbed in so they die. My understanding is that ivermectin helps the inflammatory process in the skin. Apparently they use it for rosacea in humans. I hope your boy feels better soon. It’s so hard to watch them trying to find relief. |

MTG works the same way -- it smothers. Very old school, but it worked on an itchy dock. I'd only use it if temperatures aren't already hot.

For those who have never used MTG and are thinking about it - it smells a bit like rancid bacon so just keep that in mind. It may work by smothering, but I've always wondered a bit if the smell doesn't have something to do with it as well :-)

Cindy...have you asked a vet to look at these dots, or even removing some of them yourself and looking under a microscope or magnifying glass? I hope you can get to the bottom of this soon. It makes me itch just looking at the pics!!!

Hi Cindy ....I don't know if this would provide some relief until you get to the bottom of Oden's problem but i use an Uckele product called Leave It Be Salve for Relevante's unexplained itches and it works like a charm every time. He tends to get these little patches on the back of his hind quarters that itch enough to cause him to rub...as soon as I notice them I put the salve on and they heal and disappear.....https://uckele.com/leave-it-be-salve-8.html

Thanks everyone for the advice.
One of our “science-y” members contacted me privately and offered to look at my black dots under her microscope; so black dots are mailed to her! I don’t think they’re mites, but I’ll be very glad to know for sure.
I do use an antibacterial spray on his itchy spots, but there aren’t “patches” that I can cover with salve. The black dots are literally everywhere from head to tail bone, and from his withers to his fetlocks, if I look hard enough. There’s no way to cover them with MCT or a salve.
When I have more information, I’ll report back.

Ahhhh...I didn't realize they are everywhere....Leave It Be does come in a 16 oz or 32 oz spray. I'll be very interested to know what this is as well. Another equine mystery to solve.
