HOPE MY FARRIER WILL HELP.  IF TIKO WAS BORN WITH BROKEN BACK  HPA AND GROUND PARALLEL COFFIN BONES , WHAT IS OUR GOAL; IS THE GOAL TO SHORTEN TOES , ADJUST HEELS AND ENCORAGE SOLE TO CONTINUE TO THICKEN ?  WILL THIS CHANGE THE POSITION OF COFFIN BONE AND HELP HPA. HOW LONG DO THESE ADJUSMENTS TAKE ? Somehow, there were 3 albums for Tiko's photos - you only need one for all of them. I've combined them all into the album that is already in your signature so you don't need to update your signature. I've deleted the two extra albums.

Hi Daisy,

While his natural palmer angle may be on the lower end of the spectrum, it is highly unlikely that Tiko was born with broken back HPAs and ground parallel coffin bones. Rather, those are common results of trimming issues that people create by allowing heels to underrun and toes to get horizontally too long. It's much easier to prevent them than it is to correct them after they get established.

Yes, the goals are to get the toes shortened, the heels back under the horse so that the entire hoof capsule stands up taller and straighter, where it is better able to support the bony column properly. This will also help increase the sole thickness and diminish the sinking IF the underlying EMS is also tightly managed. Feet adapt to whatever surface they spend the most time on. If Tiko is living on the same type of ground that he is being ridden on, then once his feet get healthier and develop concavity he should be comfortable on those surfaces. If not, then boots should be able to give him the needed protection/support without sacrificing overall hoof health by applying shoes.
