Source for tested hay in New Jersey?

@SarahNJ

Does anyone have a recommendation for a seller of high-quality, tested hay in New Jersey? I'm struggling to find appropriate hay for a lean senior Thoroughbred who is not an easy keeper. He's currently getting close to 10 lbs a day of soaked Timothy Balance Cubes to supplement his hay while I search. Thank you in advance.

Hi Sarah,

It's hard to find any hay dealers that test using anything other than NIR methods but depending on how central you really are in NJ (my version of central would be Somerset but for the folks who live in Cape May it's closer to Trenton) you can try the folks on this list: Re: tested hay NJ (groups.io)

@SarahNJ

That's VERY helpful- thank you! I'm familiar with some of those names but not others on that list. For the right hay, I'm willing to drive to the moon, ha ha!

You're welcome and one more in the Flemington area: Kathy Reitano:  LilRr Farm LLC; 211 Old Croton Road; Flemington, NJ 08822 · (732) 991-7980

There are more folks up north too if none of those pan out.

@SarahNJ

I have another source to add to the list for anyone looking:

Reynolds Hay Straw and Feed in Bordentown, NJ carries western timothy from Anderson. The hay is organized by lot number and is analyzed by Anderson Hay (based in Washington). I independently tested a few bales of hay from the same lot number through Equi-Analytical and the numbers were consistent with the analysis I was provided. The folks at Reynolds are very helpful, as was the person I spoke with from Anderson.

Bumping this up to ask if anyone in NJ has had any hay luck this summer? The local hay farmers and dealers I'm working with are all very helpful but I have only found one who has an analysis available so I am testing everything else myself. I have 3 samples mailed out for analysis at the moment and am thinking ahead about where else to look if the 3 samples of hay I tested aren't appropriate for my horse.

I made some calls this spring and some of the hay dealers on the list linked in this thread no longer test their hay, or at least don't have anything tested at the moment. I'm happy to drive for the right hay so even if you're adjacent to NJ, I'm all ears. I'm also happy to pool resources and share any tests I have done so we all can save time and money. Thank you in advance.

Hi Sarah,

I can recommend a farm in Springfield Township, Burlington County, that I bought from for years. I used to test the hay myself, up until three years ago, and it consistently tested low in starch and sugar, according to ECIR standards. Let me know if you’d like contact info, and I’ll send to you.

Hi Sarah,

Here is the info:

Bright View Farm, Route 545, Chesterfield, NJ

Call: Lupe (pronounced Lu-pay)
Cell: (609) 352-9303

Tell him Christina from Columbus referred you. He is the farm manager, a very nice guy. I know the farm owner, and the entire operation is of high integrity.

I used to take my own samples from their hay barn and send them for analysis, both first and second cut. I did this for at least five years, until three years ago when I sold my farm and no longer test hay. Every test I did during those years was excellent, below ECIR threshold for sugar/starch, except for one sample one year that was slightly over.

Best wishes,

Christina

I’m waiting on the test results on some 1st cut Timothy in West Amwell, Hunterdon County.  The hay I’m testing was cut in the morning so hoping it will work.  I’m willing to share my results once they come in.

Hi Sarah, I received my hay analysis this morning and I posted a copy in my case history file, it  is labeled 2022-06-16 hay analysis.  The owner is Kit Crisafulli and the business is Deer Run Hay Company.  He has been very responsive to emails, deerrunhayco@....  They have a Flemington address but located in one of the Amwells
