which Equi-analytical test to choose
I'm going to run my pasture & hay analysis again (with the next hay delivery) to be able to send in for balancing help.
I ran the NIR 601 the last time on my Hay... is 603 better? -- - Griffin Jan 2018, Charlottesville, VA Sully Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Griffin%20and%20Sully Sully Photo Album: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=274313 Prophecy Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Griffin%20and%20Prophecy Prophecy Photo Album: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=17115 |

For the most accurate results you want the 603 which is run by wet chem.

Hi Griffin,
The #603 Trainer’s Test is the one we recommend. Our recommendations for staying below 10% ESC + starch are based on the results from from that test, which is done with wet chemistry. It also provides mineral content, allowing you to balance the hay appropriately nutritionally. We’ve found that NIR results often differ considerably from those obtained using wet chem techniques. -- Martha in Vermont

Hi Griffin. We recommend the 603 - it is a much more accurate analysis as compared to the NIR.

Thanks, I don't remember the NIR even being an option a few years ago and after a webinar with DairyOne that I saw she said the NIR was just as good for EMS type balancing.
I'll make sure to run the 603 this time! -- - Griffin Jan 2018, Charlottesville, VA Sully Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Griffin%20and%20Sully Sully Photo Album: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=274313 Prophecy Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Griffin%20and%20Prophecy Prophecy Photo Album: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=17115 |

For determining that the forage has safe levels of ESC and Starch for a horse with EMS, she's wrong. That isn't balancing, but rather a test to establish suitability for an EMS horse. Accuracy is critical.
For balancing minerals only, she's right -- because both tests use the exact same methods to determine minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, etc. -- Cass, Sonoma Co., CA 2012 ECIR Group Moderator Cayuse and Diamond Case History Folder Cayuse Photos Diamond Photos |

Thank you, Trisha for posting this link. Very informative. I didn't know there were options. So new to all of this. I have only found the diet/hay testing information in Pete Ramey's articles. And thank you Griffin for starting this topic.
