Flax oil

Anette

Since TCN Flax is either hard to find or extremely high priced ,I've been considering flax oil. Is this a good option ? If so ,what is the difference in measuring it out? I have looked at whole seeds as well and that's pricey too because I can't get them locally.

Hi Annette,

I fed flax oil for about a year.  I know there is a post by Jaini Clougher on how much to feed (I can't find it right now), but as I recall it was 2.5 Tablespoons for a ~1000 lb horse.  It needs to be refrigerated and should be used up within 3 months.  It is NOT cheaper than whole flax by any means...unless you buy livestock grade flax oil, which I would not do.

The stability of the omega-3 fatty acids in this product is highly questionable. Flax oil need to be refrigerated and have limited exposure to oxygen (opening the container).

What about the flax oil, Horse Guard Flaxen Flow cold pressed Flaxseed oil? It's in an enclosed bag that never gets opened, and has a spout, so it doesn't get exposed to air. It says it doesn't have to be refrigerated. Seems to stay fresh in my kitchen pantry.
Thank you,

Ask Horse Guard if they have done independent stability studies.

Thank you for this link, this is a bit cheaper than the gallon of human flax I found. Refrigeration is't a problem since there is a frig at the barn and feeding it to 9 horses should use it up in enough time to not go rancid.

The package says stabilized with nitrogen.

Replacing air with pure nitrogen gives a longer shelf life but as soon as you open it up that goes away.

I contacted Horse Guard and this is what they told me. I've gone through 3 bags and always check for rancidity, seems fine. I find it easy to use and not too expensive.

-"-Hi Bonnie, The bag is nitrogen protected and doesn't have any oxygen in it at all so the bag of product will not go rancid. We use the innovative packaging aka Wine Pouch so that no oxygen reaches the product until it's exposed from the spout. For further help, you can reach our nutritionist who specializes in flax and created the Flow product. Dr. Kelsey's email is horsenutrition@..."

So that would be the same stabilization as Ultra Cruz's oil?

I haven't seen anything about nitrogen processing with Ultra Cruz and even if it was it would be exposed as soon as you open the container. The HG Flaxen Flow is in a pouch evacuated of air and comes out with a spout in the bottom so no air would get in.

Big difference... thank you... I think I'll stay with grinding flaxseed.
