Steglatro
Does anyone know if a 15mg once a day could be tool potent for a 20 year old mare with controlled insulin at 8 (range 10-40)? Excessive weight loss has me concerned.

Hi Bonnie,
Short answer is yes and weight loss could be an indicator of this. However, we really need to have you fill out a case history for your mare so we can advise you properly. As was mentioned before, Steglatro (an SGLT-2 drug), is NOT a first line of defense for controlling insulin, as using this class of drugs requires a very specific diet and regular blood work monitoring. Without these steps, it is very easy for glucose levels to drop and tryglycerides to rise to dangerous levels. These should be considered as a last choice when a correctly mineral balanced diet, exercise and Metformin have not lowered insulin to manageable levels. -- Lavinia, George Too, Calvin (PPID) and Dinky (PPID/IR) Nappi, George and Dante Over the Bridge Jan 05, RI Moderator ECIR |

curious, why would this medicine help with trying to prevent excessive weight loss when the insulin level is normal?

To add to Lavinia's response, dose depends on weight and animals on these SGLT2 inhibitors often need different diets from what they had before starting it. As she said, we need all the details.

Bonnie,
SLGT-2 inhibitors are experimental drugs in horses. Please contact Dr Kellon at Drkellon at gmail dot com with your veterinarian's contact details. You and your vet will want to review Dr Kellon's information to make the best decisions for your horse. https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/276185 -- Cass, Sonoma Co., CA 2012 ECIR Group Moderator Cayuse and Diamond Case History Folder Cayuse Photos Diamond Photos |
