“Highest insulin I’ve ever seen”

I just got an email from my vet.  I haven’t done new case histories yet but I’ve had the blood work and X-rays done on my 2 minis who are still struggling after a month.  ACTH is controlled but the insulin is the “highest she’s ever seen”.  They are currently on a diet of TC Timothy Natural cubes with appropriate supplements, including a scoop of J herb (not syringed) and the vet wants to put them on Thyroid L to get insulin down.  I’m completely overwhelmed and exhausted  but I know I remember reading TL is not what they need.  I thought it’s Metformin I need to give them.  I will work on case histories this evening.

Ask your vet to download and read this https://trace.tennessee.edu/utk_graddiss/871/ . Note that this PhD work was supervised by Dr. Nick Frank, who wrote the papers supporting Thyro-L earlier. It has no effect on insulin sensitivity.  If they are overweight, it could help get weight down but so does feeding the correct level of calories and that works without suppressing their natural thyroid function.

Yes, metformin will drop the insulin within days https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23600690/ . Dose is 30 mg/kg and the prescription can be called into any human pharmacy so you get it asap.

Thank you Dr Kellon.  I have forwarded the information to my vet and hoping to have the RX shortly.

don’t be overwhelmed. You’ve come to the right place. This group will fix your horses with high insulin hopefully swiftly and effectively..  always hopeful  The fact that your vet offered thyroid L means that he is she just doesn’t know enough. And you need to advocate strongly. Some people can do that and some people can’t. I wish you the best
