vaccines ppid horses

thank you for the replies on the correct Vaccine. I’m trying to find a three-way locally so I don’t have to have ir shipped . So far I am unsuccessful. Funny, some of my local  tack stores have the West Nile but don’t have a three-way which I assume is not as popular. I will keep on looking.  thanks again .  This is another example of why I will get the best information from this group versus our local vet that often know nothing. Right now

Very puzzling your vet said that because that's exactly what I did i.e. gave EW/T (made by Pfizer) and WN (made by Zoetis) vaccines separately.  What I could not find was a vaccine without tetanus.  I believe Zoetis used to be a subsidiary of Pfizer.  I purchased both vaccines from our local farm supply store but ValleyVet might have them available on-line.

thank you for your reply. That’s exactly what I thought. Here is the comment my vet just sent a few minutes ago

Ewt only vaccines do not exist. I can give an EWT/WN vaccine, but not an EWT only
Any thoughts on strategy based on this comment? What I can use to put things up and give the west now only and then satisfy my other requirements?

The immune system is challenged in some way every minute of every day. The goal with splitting vaccines is to avoid overstimulation. There is also some evidence that titers are better when vaccines are split.

so I went out and got the west Nile only vaccine and my plan is to give it soon and one week later have the vet give the EWTvaccine that she carries on board. This was her response? What are the thoughts on challenging immune system twice versus breaking up the vaccines  and having less challenges at one time?

The west Nile vaccine in that picture is the same one combined into the ewt vaccine I was going to give. Instead of two vaccines he would receive one that has ewt/WN by that same exact company. I recommend giving the ewt/WN vaccine so his immune system is not challenged twice.

Thank you both kindly for your replies. My goal will be to get the West Nile and the EWT one week apart as suggested.

Tetanus and the encephalitis viruses are indeed deadly but encephalitis (other than WNV) may not be an endemic problem in your area. You would have to research that with the health department.  As for tetanus, it depends on when he was last vaccinated. Horses that had correct vaccination as a foal and yearly boosters can go at least 3 years between boosters https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26284567/ . In people, it's 10 years.

LJ,

Personally I vaccinate my horses for anything that can kill them - Tetanus falls in that category.  You can get the EWT as one vaccine and WNV as another and do them a week or so apart if you're worried about a reaction.

I suggested to my vet zoetis wnv only. And this was my vets response. She wants me to use the zoetis west Nile plus ewt. Thoughts? Thank you

This vaccine does not have tetanus nor the encephalitis vaccines. If he sustains a laceration, he needs to have tetanus performed within the last year

I've used the Zoetis Core vaccine multiple times for Mill and Jack without incident. It's called Core because is covers the vaccines a horse needs even if it never steps a hoof off the home property (Eastern & Western Encephalomyelitis, West Nile, Tetanus and Rabies). Several years ago I spoke directly with a Zoetis equine rep about reactions. She said the number was exceptionally small despite the number of doses administered. I don't remember the exact percentage. Their website says 99.7% reaction free, but that doesn't help if your horse is the 0.3%.

All the available vaccines here are inactivated. I would go with Zoetis because of their guarantee https://www.zoetisus.com/products/horses/west-nile-equine-vaccine-for-horses.aspx# .

it’s time for vaccines. With my horse being old. I don’t allow the two with a three-way the four-way the five way. And only want to use what’s essential. The bond requires flu rhino and west Nile. Today the vet administered the flu rhino and I need to choose which west Nile to use next week or after.
she carries

ewt zoetis   core wnv rabies . She likes the core Vaccine but I’m not interested in the rabies. And I don’t wanna bother with EWT either. With that said, I know one of the vaccines for west nile has higher titres than the others. ?But may not be available? So, what should I order for West nile only? Thank you
