flax

we all know that flax is a very important item to include  in a horses diet That is not eating grass. With that said, I’ve always used triple crown ground flax omega max whatever you wanna call it. A horse friend who is well tuned in with all the supplements says that ground flax like that has already lost so much of its nutritional value it’s not nearly as good as freshly ground flax And other alternatives. . thoughts on this  ?  I won’t have a grind my own flax, but are there other alternatives that are superior to the product I’m using?

Hi LJ,  I remember first reading about flax years ago in Horse Journal.   (Probably another of Dr Kellon's articles).   The article described a process that resulted in the ground flax being "stabilized",  preserving its nutritional value and giving it a longer shelf life.   If I remember correctly, two of the first companies doing this were Horse Tech, and Omega Fields.

Some big companies, like Pizzey in Canada, select only mature golden or brown seeds, discarding green or very dark seeds. Others use a process like this https://patents.google.com/patent/US4857326A/en . I don't know who supplies Triple Crown with their flax. Regardless of the method, stability is from 12 to 24 months when unopened if not mixed with other ingredients. Milling is an ultrafine sharp slicing process which apparently does not damage the fat deposits in the seed the way that crushing them for oil extraction does.

Are there any nutrient differences between types of flax i.e. golden vs brown?

When I did an internet search for bulk quantity flax seeds years ago, I found companies that offer Cold Milled Flax Seed for human and equine. They say due to their process, the shelf life is up to two years if I remember correctly. I buy a 50 pound bag of cold milled flax seed for my two horses. Hope that info helps you.
