Haylage Cushings/Laminites
@GHK
Hi.
I am very new to Laminites and cushings. So sorry for quesations i ask that i probably should have known the answer to by now:-/ But first question: Laminites/cushings and Haylage(not shure if thats the right word in english, but in Norwegian we call it silasje(Wet hay) If mold free this should be the best alternative for laminites horses? My pony get his, but i am starting to wonder if this is making her sick. Its very low in sugar and when i see mold i dont feed with that batch. But even if you dont see it or smell it. Can it be something in it that make her sick?Spores? When i think back to when i got her, she was healthy but had laminites 2-3 years prior.But she was healthy and energetic. She had always been fed with dry hay, so we did that. But we started to buy dry hay wrapped in plastic. She got laminites. I thought the feed wasnt the problem and got advice to feed haylage. We did that and made shure it was low in sugar. She got on her feet and wasnt sore, but something seemed "off". She had lost her energy it seemed. She was up and down. And was fine, then she got laminites again. She took som test and it showed that she had cushings. She is on 1/4 prascend. She got better from laminites, but she still seems off....? And now she got a cough...No fever, just cough. Can she be allergic to mold spores? I started to feed with only dry hay now. Couple of days and i think (maybe i imagine it) that she seems more "on" What do you guys think? -- Hilde Norway https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=273158 |

Hi Hilde, In the pictures you posted earlier this year Fiona appears to be overweight, her toes are too long in the x-rays and she has bone remodeling which indicates there have been long term issues with her feet. These issues probably go back to before you got her if she had laminitis before. Has she lost weight over the last few months? Are her hooves in better shape now? Whatever hay you are using should be less than 10% ESC+starch. If you have lost track of it the diet we recommend is outlined here: Re: Shetlandpony 12 year laminites (groups.io) which is your welcome letter from March. Mold can exist before we humans can see or smell it so while you are avoiding the obviously bad batches there is a chance Fiona has been exposed to some mold. In my experience, most horses will not eat moldy hay if they have a choice but obviously it's better to not take a chance with it at all, particularly as it can cause them to cough even if they're not eating the hay, just breathing in the mold (same as in people). If you have not been able to test the dry hay I would soak it before feeding which will help with the sugar content and will also be better for Fiona if she's coughing. Have you had her insulin tested or her ACTH checked since she's been on Prascend?

Hi Hilde,
It is important to test her non-fasting baseline ACTH (to see if your pony is getting enough Prascend to control the PPID) as well as insulin and glucose to see if the diet is low enough in sugar and starch. We are not overly familiar with haylage but it seems very popular in the UK and northern Europe. It is a great feed for equines with EMS, if you can be confident mold is not a problem. In the US and Canada hay can be tested for mold toxins at various forage testing labs (like Equi-Analytical)...can you look into that type of testing in Norway? -- Kirsten and Shaku (IR + PPID) - 2019 Kitimat, BC, Canada ECIR Group Moderator Shaku's Photo Album |

Thank u😊
yes,and i have tested it.But we a buy a lot of balls at once and can only test one or two because it cost a lot for testing haylage and hay🥺So i could never know If all of the balls are safe really🥺Just assume that haylage from the same batch would be getting same results🥺 -- Hilde Norway https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=273158 |
