feeding prascend in a mix

Bev and Skeeter and Magic

Hi, Suddenly Skeeter is not taking his prascend in the low carb "treat" method that we've used for two years. He refuses to take it in most methods and the method of disolving in water and then squirting in the mouth method is pretty awful for him. He gets a small amount of soaked Timothy Balanced Cubes with California Trace pellets and flax, salt, mix daily. Can I put the prascend tablet into this mix? Or feed him a handful of the soaked mix with the prascend tab hidden inside as a "treat"? Or does that reduce the efficacy of the tablet? Thank you.

Hi Bev,

You can feed it in something else but you need to be 10000% sure that the Prascend is getting in him and not falling to the floor or being spit out.  I will use a standard 3cc syringe for most horses but if needed a drench syringe to get it all the way to the back of their mouth is the best method IME.  Small Flock Drencher - Premier1Supplies is just one example.

The goat drenching syringes can be found on Amazon for about $20.

I use the goat drenching syringe on Eeyore, and it works. He is very sensitive and resistant, so this is not a happy moment in his day; but it is working.

thanks so much Sherry, Sharon and Cindy. I just bought two and am anxious to try the goat drenchers.

How do you get the prascend into the syringe? From the pictures it looks like I would draw the liquid with dissolved prascend up into the syringe? Is there a way to get the tablet into the syringe with water and then have it dissolve in the syringe itself?

Also, do you place the end of the syringe back far in the horses' mouth and the squirt?

Hi Bev,

Not that complex. Usually the syringes come in three parts: the tube the med goes in (the actual syringe), the plunger and the nozzle. To assemble: screw the nozzle onto the tube, but don't insert the plunger. I put the pill in the syringe and then hold it in one hand with a finger over the end of the nozzle so when I add water to the syringe it won't leak out. You don't need a lot and you don't want to fill it because there will be a bit of pressure when you insert the plunger into the syringe. Once the plunger is in just enough to make a seal I flip the syringe over and take my finger off the end so I can set the plunger firmly in.

This sounds complicated but really only takes a minute or less. I could perhaps figure out how to do a video of it LOL.

Anyway, once everything is set up you put the end of the nozzle as far back as you can before squeezing the plunger.

Personally I don't like sucking up dissolved meds because you're going to lose some in the process and this is too important to lose any IMO.

I recently had to begin syringing in Sunday's pergolide. I found using the disposable syringes awkward, as I always seemed to get sprayed by a little bit of water & partly dissolved med when I released pressure by removing my finger from the tip after inserting the plunger. Now I have a reusable syringe like this:  https://www.premier1supplies.com/p/nylon-syringe?p1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwzqSWBhDPARIsAK38LY-ZQIsKjofYh8WpE1wVG9qVVNz-QRHb7v1DEkJoaTVkO392UJ6vY6YaAioPEALw_wcB
It works great - I unscrew the plunger back & remove, place pills or capsule powder into syringe, put plunger back & screw down, then suck desired amount of warm water up through the tip (3 cc). I can do this even just with the stream running from the tap. Place finger over tip to shake. Works great & lasts forever. Plunger can be lubed with a bit of coconut oil or similar if it begins to get sticky.

I open the capsule and put the medicated powder into the goat drencher tube dry.  Then I assemble the syringe and suck up a little bit of baby food (carrot, banana, and mango).  Shake well and let it sit for a while.

I have to sneak a rope around Eeyore’s head and very gently press his head against my thigh.  (He’s a mini.)  Then, you just have to get the tip between the lips.  Once that’s done, go in a little bit further and squeeze.  Then I give him a good scratch.

Eeyore is very sensitive, and I was afraid this would ruin our relationship.  But he understands this only happens once a day.  Yes, he avoids me at that time of the day, but I am persistently gentle, and proceed with the attitude that this is crucial for your health and not optional.  It simply has to be done.

That's a good, gentle method. I would mention though that since the dose is so extremely small any residue left in the syringe would be significant. I would pull up a second dose of the baby food to flush the syringe and give that.

Yes, I’ve wondered about that.  A small bit is wasted with every application.

I transitioned my very picky horse to syringing the prascend. I syringed a small amount of Aperti peppermint food flavoring( about a cc or so 2-3 times a day for about 3 days) then when she started to look for the syringe I added in 1/4 of a tab and worked up slowly to her full dose of 2 tabs. 3 cc of warm water and 3 cc of peppermint flavor is what she can tolerate. she still looks for the syringe. I also draw up a small flush of warm water to ensure all of the med is given. I am so much happier. I did 4 years of trying to get her to accept the prascend in her food. She would eat it for awhile and then go right off her feed and not touch anything - I wasted alot of time and money trying different foods. She's happier and I'm happier.

I mix warm water with the prascend- about 3 cc, then about 3cc's of the flavoring in a small plastic bowl and draw it up in the syringe. after I do the first syringe, I pour a little warm water in the bowl and redraw up to ensure I get it all. she does not mind the second syringe.

Do you worry about what is lost in the tip?

Hi Mary, After I switched to syringing, I waited 3 weeks at their prescribed dose and retested them both and they are very well controlled. Retesting was for my piece of mind that they were getting their dosing....:)
