Lavinia Isaac Trim coming up - Mark ups/Help

Hi Lavinia,
I have finally taken photos of Isaac's feet. I will be trimming him soon. Any advice is appreciated. We are on a 4 week trim cycle. I have two horses and two ponies, so I trim one each week.

I have included 3 photos from 2019 where I started trimming Isaac on my own following Pete Ramey's How-To articles. These 3 photos were taken right after a farrier had trimmed him. I actually only used this farrier less than a year. Such a long story, but this farrier used a grinder instead of a rasp and could only come (3 hrs away) when another customer needed trims. The other customer has a track system and would not call for the farrier until 9, 10, 12 weeks had gone by. When I agreed to use her farrier I did not realize this was the case. All of their lives my horse had always been trimmed 8 weeks max, mostly 6-7 weeks.  When I realized the awful condition of my ponies feet (and they were lame) a good friend, who has always trimmed her own, came and helped me get started trimming. I have never regretted learning how to take over their hoof care. The rest is History.

I have found Isaac to be the hardest to trim of the four. I am always learning and trying my best, but he grows so fast. Last year I did trim him every two weeks. I am afraid of hitting blood on the hind foot sole. I know he has NPA and I am not sure how to stay ahead of that.

Thanks for adding some photos - I know it isn't easy getting hoof photos. Even at the best of times it can make you feel like you're playing a game of Twister.

Isaac himself is looking good and his trim has improved since you took over, so good job. All four toes need to be taken further back so that the breakover is closer to the tip of the frog. Would you be able to get lateral photos of all four feet which include the cannon bones? Also need the RF, LF and LH sole views as the ones currently in the album are too blurry to really see the structures or are not straight-on sole shots.

Taking the shots with a solid wall behind him, rather than a doorway with the sun streaming in, will make them a lot clearer. If you hold the camera further away from the feet from the feet, the focus will be better.

Thanks, Rene, I've downloaded your photos for Lavinia.  Much better without the sunlight behind them.

I noticed your camera is focusing on the background, not the hoof, in most of your pictures.  This is something you might want to practice with fixing.  Generally holding it farther away from the hoof makes it easier to focus on the hoof, or putting it in "portrait" mode so that it knows to focus on the closest object can help.  I know its hard to get it to focus on the hoof because often there is a lack of sharp edges for it to pick up on, so my phone at least will often prefer to focus on the background (which is farther away, too, so easier for the phone to focus on), but with practice and patience you can get it to work.  Also, you might want to check the image settings because they seem to be quite low resolution, which makes them grainy.  And lastly, getting photos squared on the hoof sole so the hoof looks symmetrical is really helpful.  Your shots are a bit oblique to the bottom of the sole, which distorts things.  Just a few things to play around with.  :)  Tracking your trims with regular photos will show you a lot as his hooves change (or don't change), I can't recommend it enough!

One more comment, this on is on naming photos.  Because your July 23 photos are labelled "7-23-2022" and your July 24 photos are labelled "07-24-2022" when I sorted your photos chronologically (by name, descending) so that the most recent should appear first, the July 23 photos actually show up at the top of the list because the July 24 names have the "0" in them.  You can see that if the year changes and I sort again, the years will start to get mixed up because it will be sorting by months first.  We actually want photos labeled in YYYY-MO-DY format, as described below. 

Naming Hoof Photos

Using the following pattern for naming the images in your photo album. This will order the images in a coherent manner chronologically when using the "Sort By Name - with down arrow" when viewing your album.

 

To re-name photos after uploading: use the Edit button after clicking on the photo you wish to re-name. In the Name field type the new name the following ways:

HOOF PHOTOS NAMING PATTERN:

  1. Type in the YYYY-MO-DY (date the photo was taken). Do not use a different date format or ordering will not work.
  2. Identify the Foot - LF, RF, LH, RH (left front, right front, left hind or right hind)
  3. Identify the Photo Angle - this makes it clear which way the horse is standing.
  4. Try to upload only a single best version of a hoof angle per session (date). If you can't decide which is best, and must add another version, add letters to the end of the file name.

This is a bit of a learning curve, Rene, so no need to be sorry. Very few people (myself included) get this right on the first (or second) shot. It's a case of practice makes perfect :)

Don't worry about that.  I just don't know if Lavinia can do your markups with those photos.  If you want to try the sole shots again,  I think those are the ones that need the most improvement.
