Jiaogulan

@GHK

Hi.

When should you use Jiaogulan? My pony is feeling better and do not have any acute laminites, but had very low energy and was a bit off.
She also have cushings. She has had winterlaminites the two last winters and i wanted to try jiaogulan so i could prevent that this winter.

But is it wrong to start now?

I swear to god after 4 days on jiaogulan she runs around and seems verry happy.
She hasnt run for months. She has energy and she is just like she was years ago.

Could this herb do this?

Yes, the herb can do that, and does do that, so you have your answer. Enjoy! You also need to make sure her PPID is controlled and you keep her feet and legs warm in the cold.

Jiaogulan can truly be a wonder herb. I'm delighted every time we get a report like this.

That sounds wonderful!
I just received Gynostemma extract from Bulk Supplements.
What is it supposed to smell and taste like?
The package i got has a brown powder that seems like tea powder.
Not much taste, maybe like strong tea, no real smell. Like tannins or something.
Not offensive to me at all dry or in water.

Lesley,

I only have experience with the whole herb, not extracts. That is green, smells like sweet hay, and is well accepted.

Dr Kellon,
Is that the way it comes from Uckele?

Lesley,
It's so funny that you asked this because I was just about to pose the same question to the group! My first batch of Jiaogulan was from My Best Horse and it was bright green and smelled like fresh cut grass.  I just received a new batch from Bulk Supplements and it is brown and smells like tea. The Bulk Supplements package says that it is leaves and stems, so I'm wondering if maybe the green powder is only leaves.  Either way, my horse seems to enjoy it. I've never seen it suggested as a taste-tempter, but that's how I use it.

You definitely only want leaves for the active components.

Huh. I am going to get the whole plant product, since this is an the extract.
I suspect any studies done have been with the whole plant?
I thought I read horses would go off feed if given this herb to much too fast. I assumed it had a strong flavor. I will do a taste test when it arrives from Uckele :)

I love the smell of jiaogulan in the morning.

(I’ve been wanting to write that for years, lol)

None of my horses have ever objected to jiaogulan sprinkled on top of their feed or as a paste in a bit of water. It’s such a small amount needed to be effective that I wouldn’t imagine you could feed ‘too much’.

Lesley,

What do you mean by "whole plant". Studies are with extracts from the leaf. I have never heard of horses going off feed from Jiaogulan. They love the taste.

Hi Maxine
Where do you get your J herb from please? I have bought it from 2 different places in Australia, and both have been brown powder and smell a bit like tea.
Thanks

Got mine from Bulksupplements too. Same thing, brown and not appreciated by my equine friends. So what should I look for? Leaf parts only and or leaf parts extract? Must be green and smell like hay?

When Dr. Kellon said what her experience is she should
Smelled like hay and sounded like loose leaf.  What I ordered is the extract and it smells nothing like hay and tastes like tea extract. I'll compare the 2 when the Uckele bag comes
I ordered it from Uckele and

I ordered Laminox from Uckele and it was brownish color and smelled like tea.  I opted for Laminox so maybe that’s why it’s brown in color.
