Cheapest Prascend
My vet has become resistant to prescribing compounded pergolide and I fear that soon I will be dosing 2 horses (1 is on 4mg and the other on 1 mg) with the Rx formula. I may be looking for job to pay for this. So,
what is cheapest source for Prascend, bought in the 160 tablet size? Thanks!

Unfortunately, BI has the ability to prevent any sellers of Prascend from discounting it I have both my mares on Prascend right now and I just bought the 160 ct. from Chewy. Every seller I looked at had the exact same price except for a place in Ohio. My concern when you find a seller discounting a box ( and they only have a couple left) is that what they have is old inventory and is going to expire. If you cannot get your vet on board with Rx. compounded at least for the 4 mg horse, you are going to have to pay BI price.

I think you would be wise to sway your vet,for financial reasons,if nothing else.
Thousands here have fed compounded pergolide for about 2 decades, with the sought-after results, according to blood work.
Fortunately,I never had to make the choice(pre Prascend days)for my 7 boys, some of whom were on 14mgs, as they aged. I could never have afforded BI's product. My boys lived to be in their 30's and 40's .
Just a thought.

I called my vet's office and asked if I could have the Prascend script called into WalmartPetRx.com - at the time the best online price I could find. This was about a year or more ago.
To save the sale so to speak - she asked me if she could check about price matching if I let them fill it for me instead of going to an online place.
Sure.
She called back later that day and from then on they have reduced the price for me every time I order. Usually they make it a close price to the online price with the $30 rebate kicking in to make it very close to the online price. The rebate can come or go - but it's always been in place when I've needed to order.
They now have that in the computer and I don't have to keep asking for the better price.
It's not THE best price - but it's close enough to the online stuff that I feel ok getting it from my vet.
I HATE having to 'haggle' over price for an essential medicine that my horse needs because big pharma has hijacked a decades old compound to pad their pockets.
Vet is coming out this morning to pull blood to see if we need to increase Salsa up to 2 prascend a day - which makes me cringe.
Good luck to us all and I'm jealous of everyone that can get their hands on compounded pergolide - hopefully the price on that is still affordable for folks!

The following paper is what vets read that often scares them regarding Rx compounded.
drug_compounding_guidelines.pdf (aaep.org)
The following paper is for horse owners and includes a section on how compounded drugs should not be used as a cost saving measure and could be dangerous.
Microsoft Word - Horse Owners Guide to Compounding - Final2.doc (aaep.org)
It's asinine. Cost figures into everything everyone does, including human medicine. It's one of the reasons generic medicines are available and often mandated by insurance companies. Why the veterinary associations don't acknowledge that and simply include guardrails to make sure compounded meds are quality instead of looked down on is shameful. I realize they are depended on research and grant money from companies such as BI, but there is no way most horse owners can afford $300 plus per month for 5-6 mgs of Prascend when compounded done correctly is equivalent in efficacy and affordable.
I normally advise people to only ask for compounding to be done because of administration issues instead of off the bat stating it's for $$ reasons and to only use accredited compounders to combat all of the legal terror that their vets get exposed to from their professional organizations. The above two linked documents are just part of the huge section on the AAEP and AVMA websites dealing with compounded meds.

Hi Amy, I'm sorry you are having this problem. It is so unneccessary! Has your vet said why she is not comfortable prescribing the CP anymore? Is she at all open to discussing evidence for efficacy, etc? I know that is probably a long shot, or so it seems from my past experiences with trying to find a vet willing to prescribe the CP but maybe worth a try?
When the dosage became unaffordable for me (plus issues of getting the Prascend into my horse and wasting every other tab!) and I was unable to get a CP prescription from any of the three vets I was familiar with, I used the veterinary board list to find every licensed vet in southern Idaho. I wrote letters to every one of them and I lucked out. I got a response from a vet who was new to my area in the first few letters I sent - before I had made it to the post office to get more stamps for the rest!
I had also called a couple of compounding pharmacies that have been mentioned by members here and asked them if they could give me the names of any vets or clinics within 100 miles of me who do prescribe it. I was willing to haul that far for an annual physical, labwork, etc because it would still be less expensive than Prascend.
Best of luck to you.

P.S.
I might add that the vet I use now is not new to practicing equine medicine - she came up from a large practice in CA and said that they prescribed the compounded pergolide "all the time". I get mine from Precision Pharmacy in Bakersfield, CA . $125 for ninety 2mg tabs, including shipping.
