Liquid Pergolide

Kathy Thomas

I just heard that Pergolide can be available in liquid form.
Is this true?  Has anyone else used it?  Thanks in advance!

I have my compounded pergolide for Summer created in an oil emulsion. She started refusing pills so it is just easier for her to administer, her dose is 1ml = 3mg.

My first experience using pergolide was in an oil emulsion.  This was before the advent of Prascend and the only way my local compounder provided it.  WhenI l learned here that ‘liquid’ pergolide was unstable, I asked the compounder and he said that it was unstable in water, their product was in oil and should be fine.  My horse’s ACTH responded appropriately with increased pergolide which was reassuring.  I have since switched to capsules but have occasionally purchased oil when I knew I would need to make dosage adjustments.  I can’t use it up fast enough that way so I usually keep some Prascend on hand just for dosage increases.

Hi Kathy,

Compounded pergolide can be made in just about any form. ECIR doesn't recommend the liquid varieties due to them being less stable than the capsules. Compounded in water is the least stable, with potency starting to drop after about 2 weeks. When compounded in oil, it is supposed to retain potency longer than in water but still a question as to whether it retains potency as long as the capsules do.

Hi Kathy, I’m in Australia and liquid Pergolide was the only form available when my old horse was diagnosed with PPID some 15 or so years ago.  As others have said, it’s quite unstable and it began t9 deteriorate as soon as the bottle was opened.  My horse did ‘ok’ on it for a few years but we did have to keep re-testing him quite frequently and upping his dose.  As soon as Prascend tablets became available I switched to those on my vet’s advice and These did seem to be more effective in keeping him stable.

Hi Kathy,
I've been using the liquid in oil for several years and it is SO much easier, less expensive and my horses have done VERY well on it... both got down below 20 on the ACTH scale.  And I did ask the pharmacist if it was less stable than capsules and she said they were pretty much the same.  For the ease, and less $'s, I'm sticking with it.  And if you need to increase their dosage, just ask it to be compounded at a higher rate of mg/ml.  And ask for bigger syringes if you start needing more than one to carry it.  Good luck with it.   (-:

Hi Cathy,
I've been using Avrio but I am going to switch to Precision Pharmacy in Bakersfield.  I think they have a location somewhere else as well that might be closer to you.
