Hay testing issues with boarding horse

Hi everyone,

I'm having a very difficult time keeping my horse on a balanced diet because the facility I board at is constantly getting new loads of hay. Also, I am unable to purchase large loads of hay as I do not have storage room.

Is anyone in a similar situation? If so, what are some suggestions or things I can do to keep her diet as balanced as possible?

Hi Ani. What you could do is ask the facility if its possible to separate 100-200 bales out of the larger amount and just test that hay. If they can keep the tested hay separate and only feed the tested hay to your horse that is one possible solution.  If you know where the hay is coming from, you can find the regional hay analysis for that area and balance your minerals to that...there are trained balancers listed here: https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/files/6%20Diet%20Balancing/HAY%20BALANCING-1.pdf   Some folks buy hay in a tractor trailer load and keep that at the boarding facility...they test that..and it stores well in the trailer  and the facility feeds from the trailer when feeding your horse or you can move some of the hay into the feeding area and label it for your horse.    --
