Omega Horse shine oats
Lesley Bludworth
Just checking in about the safety of Omega Horse Shine with the oats.
Bag says Starch 2.3% max and sugar 3.6% max Would I do better for insulin control with just straight ground flax seed? -- Lesley Bludworth Phoenix, AZ 7/2022 Sophie TWH mare https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/SophieB%20Case%20History https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=277749 |

Yes Leslie Dr.K has said it’s fine, if you do a search in the messages there are lots of discussions about it.

Thank you Nancy and Bobbie,
I have read through all the discussions. Mostly the discussions are regarding product going rancid and storage recommendations, I did not see anything about it containing oats and thightly managing insulin. I was surprised it contained oats. I will just get bulk whole flax and grind it once this bag is gone as I think it will be cheaper also. -- Lesley Bludworth Phoenix, AZ 7/2022 Sophie TWH mare https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/SophieB%20Case%20History https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=277749 |

I think we need to clarify you said this Just checking in about the safety of Omega Horse Shine with the oats. Omega Horseshine flax is fine, I was replying I didn’t know that they had a product with oats, when you said oats I thought it was something else entirely. I used Horseshine for many years and it never went bad. I actually prefer it but I supply around ten horses so I needed more product so now I use Turtle Mountain flax which is way more cost effective for me. -- Bobbie and Maggie Desi (over the rainbow bridge 7/21) Utah, Nov 2018 ECIR Group Primary Response https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Bobbie%20and%20Maggie https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=271156 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Bobbie%20and%20Desi https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=78821 |

Lesley Bludworth
I'm not concerned about it going bad. I'm concerned about insulin control and the original horse shine that is recomended has oats. Its not a separate product they sell. Turtle mt seems to be straight flax.
I did read there is differences in nutritional value between golden flax and brown flax. -- Lesley Bludworth Phoenix, AZ 7/2022 Sophie TWH mare https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/SophieB%20Case%20History https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=277749 |

There are no nutritional differences between golden and brown flax
https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/279704 In the future, Lesley, please source where you are reading your information. The low level of tested starch (<4%) makes this okay even with the oats. as stated in previous links. Fat would be a much higher driver of insulin in this case, and why large amounts of flax are not recommended. Only enough to get the correct level of Omegas into them. Please also note that unless I missed new developments, ingredients are not required to be listed in the same manner as human products. Animal labels do not require largest amounts of ingredients listed first. Time to move on please. -- Nancy C in NH ECIR Moderator 2003 ECIR Group Inc. President/Treasurer 2021-2022 |

Hi, Lesley.
The guaranteed analysis of Omega Horseshine can be found on the manufacturer's website, here, under the section on Nutrition and Usage: https://www.omegafields.com/product/omega-horseshine/ The analysis shows Sugar, 3.6% Max and Dietary Starch, 2.3% Max. In the very small amounts recommended here, ¾ cup/day for a 1000 lb equine, Omega Horseshine is safe for our metabolic horses. The order of ingredients in animal feeds is NOT necessarily an indication of the relative quantities in the product. -- Cass, Sonoma Co., CA 2012 ECIR Group Moderator Cayuse and Diamond Case History Folder Cayuse Photos Diamond Photos |
