New Bloodwork and hay analysis
Mouse and Ryn both had bloodwork done on 9/27/22. I will post in case history photo file. Their insulin is still high. Mouse Glucose: 92 Insulin 65.15 Ryn Glucose: 99 Insulin 61.52. Neither have been on grass, both are on the same hay, Ryn is in regular work, Mouse on stall rest. I will also post a picture of hay analysis in Mouse's photo file. ESC is 6.0 and Starch is .4. I cannot figure out why their insulin has not come down any more than it has. Am I not seeing something in this hay? Both get flax, Vit E, salt, r/s/r beet pulp and a small amount of Stabul 1. Slow feed hay nets, weighed, etc., at Mouse 2.0% of body weight and Ryn at 1.5 %. Any insight into what I am missing here? It has been suggested that hay needs to be balanced differently for IR horses than for a "normal" horse, i.e., I should be adding magnesium to their diets as that may be causing their insulin to stay elevated. Is this correct? I am about at wit's end on why their insulin is still elevated. If it were not for blood tests, my belief would be that since the hay is well below 10% ESC that it is "safe" for them, but clearly it is not. Many thanks Kimberly

Hi Kimberly,
Do you have an idea why they shot up in May and June? Grass? If July was the last one before these, they are coming down, just not where they should be. One thing to put on your to do list is to get your hay balanced and correct supplements in place. If you don't think their current signs match the number, also consider running them at a different lab, like BET.

Bloodwork done on July 6th was as per ECIR protocols, hay fed for 4 hours. Mouse was Insulin 113.82 and Glucose 105. Ryn was Insulin 85.58, Glucose 101. On 7/13 the vet wanted to do a "fasting" test so we did. Mouse was Glucose 99, Insulin 28.58 and Ryn was Glucose 107 Insulin 40.48. Neither have been on grass, dry lot or stall and hay that I posted today in my file. If someone could look at that hay as it is lower in ESC than what they were eating in July. It has not been balanced but the hay they were eating in July was and put on Equi-VM. It just made sense to me that if the current hay tested safer, it would be safe to feed. Maybe I am missing the mineral component here on the hay I submitted to my file today. It is in Mouse's photo album. Not sure what lab BET is? Kimberly

I can't read that hay analysis. What was the iron?
In the nonfasted sample, what had they eaten before the test?
Were both samples with metformin on board?

Sorry, forget the metformin question. I'm multitasking and dropping a few balls....
