Yeast infection

Pam Shoes

Hi,

My 24 yo IR gelding has a chronic yeast infection in his sheath for over two years now. One vet recommended Monistat. That only helped temporarily. Cleaning his sheath out with coconut oil gives him temporary relief too. Second vet said do nothing (horse got worse, his penis is bright red and he can pee but it takes a lot of effort. Probiotics (Horsetech Pro-Lactic DFM) have improved his condition but hasn’t resolved it (over 6 months). Has anyone found a solution or a specific probiotic that works for this condition?

How was this diagnosed as a yeast infection?

Dr. Kellon, this was diagnosed by a vet. An ultrasound did not indicate any stones. He penis is slick, slimy and irritated and he struggles to urinate. He can urinate; it just appears painful. He camps out and pushes hard.

Was it actually a culture diagnosis? I'm only asking the details because treatments are very different. What areas were examined with ultrasound? Has a catheter been passed?

Pam,

What tests did the vet do to rule out everything other than a yeast infection?

Pam,

Where do you live? What is the nearest vet school?
