Acepromazine and chlorpromazine are the major ones. Reserpine also lowers blood pressure but isn't used for short term effects. Xylazine reduces cardiac output and slows heart rate but doesn't lower blood pressure per se. The combination with Xylazine could be an issue in a horse with dehydration or large blood loss.

Dr. Kellon, could you please clarify the specific drugs or classes of sedatives that you would consider as "older sedatives"? I assume "preanesthetic doses" are higher than what would be used for sedation for a colic rectal exam?

My mare is already quite sensitive to sedation and it would be an added concern in an already stressful emergency situation to deal with potential interactions and unintended impacts.

Thank you!

Thank you so much for this, Dr. Kellon! I really appreciate it.

My mare has had wind puffs in both hind fetlocks for years since she was 3 or 4 years old. Ultrasounds have not indicated any significant damage. I had recently started her on jiaogulan for a couple of weeks, then had to stop abruptly. She stocked up in both hinds quite a bit which resolved in a few days. I don't have any other explanation other than stopping jiaogulan.

  • NSAIDS - flunixin and equioxx These block the action of Jiaogulan. Otherwise no interaction.
  • sedatives Only an issue with older sedatives in preanesthetic doses where the blood pressure lowering effect of the drug may be increased.
  • adequan No interaction
  • Devil's Claw No interaction

Do horses bleed significantly more if injured by laceration while on jiaogulan? Not in my experience.

Can jiaogulan be stopped immediately without weening off? What is the preferred way to stop jiaogulan if not in an emergency situation? It can be stopped immediately.

I'd like to start jiaogulan, but have concerns about its interactions with other nutraceuticals and medications. I don't want to be in an emergency situation and not be able to safely provide NSAIDs and sedative. I'd like to better understand the risks and how to mitigate them. I've found some conflicting info from the files and older messages.

What are the current recommendations for jiaogulan and interactions with other nutraceuticals/meds, specifically:
  • NSAIDS - flunixin and equioxx
  • sedatives
  • adequan
  • Devil's Claw
Anyone have their equine on jiaogulan and had to give sedation in an emergency situation? How did it go?
