uploading hay analysis and interpretation assist

Kirsten Rasmussen

Hi Kimberly,

You need to make sure your trace mineral are at the right ratio to iron so that iron doesn't block their absorption.  Too much iron results in not enough traces being absorbed, causing a depletion.  In a horse with EMS we use the ratio 4:1:3:3 for iron:copper:zinc:manganese because too much iron also worsens IR.  If you are interested in learning more, I highly recommend taking Dr Kellon's NRC Plus course.  Or you can contact one of our approved hay balancers that can do this for you.  There's a list in the Files under 6-Diet Balancing.

Just to add to hay iron before and after soaking, if the water is acidic (pH less than 7) it will ionize surface/dirt iron so that it can enter the hay. If you are doing a quick dunk/rinse, or hosing off the hay in a hay bag, it shouldn't be an issue but will be if you are soaking it.

Thank you Sherry,
I am happy to have figured it out, I guess being stressed about her laminitis had made me super-duper tech incompetent as this seemed much much harder before!
I saw that there was a PDF of Sophies case history not in her folder so I deleted it but it seems like it deleted the pdf that was inside her folder as well.  so I uploaded the updated case history again.

Leslie,

PDF files go in your case history folder. If you want to make a sub folder for hay analysis files you need to go to YOUR folder and click the "+New" button to add the new folder. Do not create another folder in the main Case History file area.

Thank you Kirsten,
She is already so happy to eat it non soaked!
The vet comes Saturday to draw blood for her ACTH levels since starting pracend so I will have her do insulin to just to see if there is any change with the non soaked hay.  I up loaded the analysis I have and will get the hay balanced once I receive the other analysis that asks for other minerals.
I currently feed Uckele's Equi-Base Senior vitamin

Hi Lesley,

That hay should be safe to feed unsoaked in all but the most sensitive (and I mean, extremely sensitive) horses.

Iron usually goes down with soaking because surface dirt/dust wash off the hay, but sometimes high iron is within the hay itself.  You can try shaking the hay to get a similar effect if you plan to feed it dry, but I would balance minerals to the highest iron number anyways.  I've analyzed the same hay a few times and found iron to vary quite widely between samples, so I balance to the highest iron analysis if I have more than 1.

High iron in well water could cause iron to increase in hay if it is left soaking too long.

Thank you Trisha,
So soaked hay has 1.4% ESC and .5% starch so 1.9%.  (1 hr, cold tap water)
They said the other sample will take 10 days as I asked for a selenium analysis but
They just got back to me about the non soaked sample ESC and starch.
The non soaked hay sample ESC is 4.4% and the starch is 1% so 5.4% total.
So this hay is safe to feed non soaked??
Do iron levels change with soaking?

Hi Lesley.  We look at the AS FED column. Look for  the % of ESC and starch- add those two numbers together. Because this lot you submitted is already soaked, you should be up to ~30% less ESC. Starch is not affected by soaking. If you choose to use this hay, you need to soak it the same way you soaked your sample that you sent it. It should be 30 minutes in hot water or 1 hour in cold- but however you did the original soaking is what you would need to do going forward- depending on your ESC and starch result.

Someone will chime in about how to upload your hay analysis. I usually put it in my Case History folder with a label that its a hay analysis. That way it stays within the link on your signature. IF you upload it separately, you have to go back into your signature and add the link.

Hello,
I am requesting assistance for what the correct process is to up load hay analysis and assist with the interpretation of where to look for what is safe or not.
I read the how to interpret your hay analysis but am not sure about the interpretation of % vs g/lb vs as sampled vs dry matter columns.
Equi-Analytical sent 1 report of hay analysis.  I sent 2 samples, one of Bermuda that was soaked and dried and the other sample not soaked  with request for expanded mineral analysis.  only the soaked sample results were emailed today.  I hope the non soaked sample analysis will come tomorrow.

To up load the PDF do I create a new folder for hay analysis files in case history sub group or just up load the pdf as a file?
Is there a correct name for the file?

Soaked this hay seems safe to feed but also says why they are not interested in eating it??
TIA
