Shreds vs pellets one feed per day
We do not consider beet pulp and hay cubes to be grain. They are "forage".
I think it's better if Dr Kellon addresses your questions about minimizing insulin spikes and generating heat, but feeding practices is getting into the Horsekeeping topics so might need to ask again on that sub-group. Our general rule is no more than 6 hrs between meals to avoid an insulin spike at the next meal. In practice, this is not easy to achieve unless you work from home and also get up at 1 or 2 am to feed. -- Kirsten and Shaku (EMS + PPID) and Snickers (EMS) - 2019 Kitimat, BC, Canada ECIR Group Moderator Shaku's Photo Album Snickers' Case History Snickers' Photo Album |

I buy Hunter Nutrition Soyhulls. They have a website. A fellow ECIR member told me to add enough water to make the hulls look like applesauce, "when in doubt add more water", he said. Feed dealer says he always top dresses grain with salt. All ages/health of horses.
I feed hay twice a day, bucket feed in morning only. -- Chatycady in the Midwest 2022 CaseHistory@ECIR.groups.io | Files |

Kirsten, this sounds like a very good division, and I would ask one more thing, keeping in mind a recent post by Dr. Kellon regarding no matter which is first, grain or hay, as long as hay with in an hour or so of bucket.
Are we considering BP, hay cubes and minerals "grain" since the carriers are hind gut digested feeds? If I were to reduce lunch hay as it is the best time for these folks or me to do pergolide and bucket feed mix and a very small amount of hay, knowing that some time between 4-6 pm the bulk of hay will be fed, would K be getting fed at a rate that would help with keeping her warm with digestive processes and insulin spikes to a manageable minimum? How to divide hay varies. I like to feed about 2/3 overnight because that is the longest stretch (5 or 6pm-8am). I give 1/6 at breakfast (8am) and 1/6 at lunch (12 or 1 pm). Bucket feed is at 5 or 6pm.
I have 1 non-metabolic horse here and I use his eating pattern to gauge what is normal. He does well on this setup. My other 2 here have EMS and are always hungry, unfortunately. -- Kirsten and Shaku (EMS + PPID) and Snickers (EMS) - 2019 Kitimat, BC, Canada ECIR Group Moderator Shaku's Photo Album Snickers' Case History Snickers' Photo Album |

Kandace,I just dampen the pellets because I worry about choke. But no soaking/rinsing/draining.
I don't know your exact question, but the horse here on dry lot, gets his bucket feed in the morning. He eats 18 pounds of hay ,in nets. One net is given after bucket feed in morning. Second net is given about 8 at night. -- Lorna in Eastern Ontario 2002 |

Lorna, $38.00 here, in Alberta. But is this correct, short soak and no rinse? And Cass's new question about Monensin contamination?
And my earlier question about a bucket feed only once daily? Also I just found that what I thought was a 8:00 pm feed is really only a visual check. How are folks dividing hay for long, long, nights? 19lbs per day divided to 3 feedings 8:00-9:00 am, noon, 4:00-600 pm? (They will allow me to set up in slow feed nets.) -- Kandace K Rocky Mountains, Alberta, Oct 2020 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Kandace%20J%20and%20K https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=259062 |

Is Monensin contamination a concern with soy hull pellets produced for cattle feed?

I’m weeping more—Maxisoy soyhull pellets are around $50 for a 20kg bag here. Speedibeet just rose to $66 for a 20kg bag. Thank goodness I’m not feeding big horses!

P.S. Local feed stores that mix feed for cattle will have soyhull pellets. Cheap. I pay $12 for a 50lb bag.

Good Morning Kandace, Do you have access to soyhull pellets? They soak up fast (10 minutes). No rinsing! I put in a rubber pan and left out all day. Hershey would eat a little at a time, as they aren't very tasty, but that's all he got besides hay. Now he eats them up fast. I top with ground flax, California Trace, and salt. Good luck!

Hi, Kandace.
1. Yes, you absolutely do need to RSR BP of all kinds, shreds or pellets. 2. All BP needs to be rinsed until the water runs clear twice and soaked once in between for 30 minutes in hot water. The abbreviation here is RSR: rinse, soak, rinse. 3. Sure, you can reduce the amount of carrier if it works. The amount of carrier is whatever it takes to get the horse to eat the supplements.. It doesn't have to be BP, BTW. I use ODTBC when my horses go on a BP strike. 4. Flax oil will go rancid if not refrigerated and used promptly. That's why ground or milled flax seed is handy. I would never add flax oil in advance, so I'm not clear what you mean about less bulk. 85 grams of ground flax is a small amount - about 178 ml/ 3/4 cup. Check the smell of the flax oil. It should NOT remind you of linseed oil used in oil painting. -- Cass, Sonoma Co., CA 2012 ECIR Group Moderator Cayuse and Diamond Case History Folder Cayuse Photos Diamond Photos |

Hello all you experienced ECIR members. I am going to a new barn and they don't want to deal with bucket feed twice a day. Questions
1) Do I need to rinse BP shreds that say no molasses? I would think shreds might have more dust/iron etc. than pellets. 2) If they still need rinsing, how many times seem sufficient? Pellets need at least 3 rinses, it seems. 3) If they will only bucket feed once daily, is it okay to drop carrier down from less than double after doubling up the rest to make up portions? I have thought about switching to flax oil from ground, but K doesn't seem to like the taste of it much. It would make the bulk less though. Anyone else dealing with this? NOTE: hay is put out 4 times daily. -- Kandace K Rocky Mountains, Alberta, Oct 2020 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Kandace%20J%20and%20K https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=259062 |
