I see this product as a vitaminE source already in oil (my mare will not consume capsules as recommended by balancer and ECIR so I have been putting Vit E
into a 1/2 tbsp of oil fo feeding)

What is the thought on this product?
Soybean oil, calcium, fish oils?

Thanks for opinions or useage histories,

Hi Kandace,

Just wondering,is it the 400IU size capsules that she objects to, or are you feeding 1000IU ?
I know size can make a difference for some horses.

With my horses, the capsule size is critical. Ariel would literally spit out the 1000 IU (Swanson) capsule, whereas Robin gobbles it up. So for a long time, I cut the capsule and squeezed out the oil, but then I tried the 400 IU capsule (from My Best Horse or any drugstore, etc.) and Ariel has no problems eating them.

Well I would not feed it for the omega 3s as its ratio to omega 6 is inverted (1:4 when it should be 4:1).  So, the added Omega 6 fats will also offset your flax supplementation a bit.  But since you only need to give 1 pump to get a full dose of vitamin E a day (not 4 pumps!), and that's about 1 oz of oil, you can probably add more flaxseed (1 oz) to offset it.

I am not sure if this is correct or not, but I throw the vitamin e capsules 400 i.u in her soaked hay cubes with her salt and other concoctions and they pretty well dissolve. I occasionally find an empty rehydrated capsule in the a.m stuck to her feed pan but thats all.

Cheryl,

That's correct. Just make sure it's E in oil, not glycerin or something else.

-- The CVS brand of vitamin E at 400 IU has oil attached. Mostly every week, they have a buy one get one free offer..  ( walgreens uses glycerin, so avoid them.  walmart also avoid)

I feed half vitamin e oil and half capsules. I’ve found that if I let myself run out and I end up getting them at our local store they’re so big that Maggie refuses to eat them, so now I do half and half since I have her at a higher dose.
I get my capsules (usually) from Amazon. They’re much smaller than ones I get from everywhere else. And they’re a larger dose so it doesn’t take as many.
My other horses eat them ok.

I keep looking for a Vitamin E in oil and can’t tell which ones are in glycerine vs oil - they all seem to have glycerine. Can you please specify which CVS  Vitamin E capsule you use? Thank you.

The glycerine is the capsule itself. If oil is listed under Other Ingredients along with glycerin then it is Vitamin E in oil. The capsules I get from Puritan’s Pride on line list soy bean oil.

Kim,

The capsules are gelatin, not glycerine (aka glycerol). Glycerine is a liquid.

Thanks for pointing out the ratio's inversion, KirstenThis topic of capsules is interesting, but my horse will not eat anything that isn't feed.  She has become very suspious of anything new in her feed pan, so I will stick to the vitamin E powder in a 1/2 Tbsp of oil.

Hello Lorna,
She objects to anything in feed, since vet clinic thought she would just "eat" 27 tablets of Metformin in a 1/2 of pellets.  I cannot even disguise the pergolide in a carrot, she will not eat them.

I buy this same product as well and have been giving it to my horses for a few months. I didn't realize I read this thread that the list of ingredients doesn't include any sort of oil; however, in March 2022, someone said that there is virgin sunflower seed oil in them. And then on January 23, 2023 one of the reviews says that this products has raised their horses Vit E level "100 points in just 3 months."

Now, I'm not sure whether to keep buying and feeding this product or not! I have 7 horses so have to be frugal. Plus 2 IR horses so am not sure what type of oil to feed or how much. Off to use that "Search" function! :)

Carolyn, I use that same product which I also got on Amazon but it does have sunflower oil in the ingredient line.  They must have changed the product.

-CVS my go to pharmacy for vit e in oil, appears to no longer stock theiir 400 iu vit e in oil, in larger quantities.  Ive always bought bottles in #240 quantities and with buy1 get 1, each capsule cost ,.03 each    for 2 horses, I use 20 capsules a day    And the 400 iu were much less expensive compared to the 1000 iu bottles  based on total iu needed .  where to get oil based  on a net cost of 03 per capsule of 400 iu???

This is what I use during summer months.
it’s a great buy and depending on how much you use it doesn’t take many. I also use powdered form, my horses get approximately 2500 to 5000 daily. It’s cheap insurance.
And the best part they’re relatively small.
