Hay Analysis ok for IR horses

hi
I uploaded to myas folder the hay analysis- we are currently soaking hay & TS beet pulp -
could someone look over hay analysis to let me know if we should still soak hay or if it’s ok to feed without soaking because of the levels .

we are giving mag ox - PhytoQuench- tc golden flax / vit E - j herb & acetyl l-carnitine

is there anything else we need to do to balance this hay ?

I have mya who is recovering from founder - Oliver same & an IR 1/2 Arabian.

mya & Oliver are on metformin as well

thank you
lori

I believe if I’m reading correctly:
protein 10.8
NSC 9.1
Sugar 5.8
starch 1.6

Hi Lori

You may have already heard that alfalfa can be a problem for our metabolic equines, even with low ESC and starch.

You don't need to worry about NSC, just the ESC and Starch which as you have seen are okay. Looks like a Wet Chem test ( aka #603) test, but even if NIR, it should be okay. We have found NIR carb tests can be off by 30%. https://equi-analytical.com/feed-and-forage-analysis/analytical-service-packages/

The major minerals are pretty good with elevated calcium, perhaps from the alfalfa. You will need phosphorous.  You don't need magnesium. Trace minerals will need copper and zinc to balance the iron.

The fiber fractions (ADF and NDF) look like this is nice hay. DE (calories) and protein are good.

Here's a post from Kirsten yesterday, with great review of evaluating hay. https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/285286

Thank you so much !
This was the trainers 603 test wet test .
Especially with winter coming on not to soak hay any longer is a true blessing ! ❤️

Should I still triple soak the beet pulp?

I’ll remove the mag ox & look up info for phosphorus zinc & copper supplement amount

is there ever a need for a general vitamin to be given to horses & if do what is it ?

thank you

Hi Lori

Please let me point you back to your welcome message from last summer: https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/topic/92098325#279589

Testing your hay and getting the minerals balanced to its excesses and deficiencies is the best way to feed any equine (look under the Hay Balancing file if you want professional help balancing). If you absolutely cannot test your hay and balance the minerals to it, or would like to use a "stop gap" product until you get your hay balanced, here's a list of "acceptable" ration balancers.

You can have a look at the ration balancers, but IMO, this hay is one that will not get balancing even close with a ration balancer. Going from memory but phosphorous is usually not in ration balancers in the amount you'd likely need and ratios would be offset by added calcium. AS for Vitamins, unless you have specific issues you are trying to address, Vitamin E is pretty much all you need on a regular basis. Vitamin A when hay is 6 to 12 months old.   Horses can generate their own Vitamin B. Unless stalled 24/7 D is not needed. Vitamin K not needed in most cases. Vitamin C is usually not recommended for IR horses as it can increase their iron absorption which can already be a problem.

If you go to Dr K's blog, you can read more abut vitamins (and a lot of other great info) by clikcing on the topics in her word cloud.

Rinse/soak/rinse the beet pulp.  Is that what you mean by 'triple wash'?

Lori Ricigliano

Yes as I have been doing since we realized they were IR - we just got their hay tested & now are getting a balancer put together to help balance their hay (phosphorus/zinc/copper)

I haven’t received the final results for the additional feed analysis or the amounts to give yet

but yes I am also currently supplementing iodized salt to all horses I’m feeding hay .

But do I continue to rinse - soak - rinse the beet pulp for the IR horses since the analysis looks like I do NOT have To soak hay any longer ?

thank you

If you are going to feed beet pulp, it needs to be rinsed/soaked/rinsed.

Does that include Speedi beet?

Yes. Speedi-beet is very high in iron. Members have tested the iron content after multiple R/S/R courses. Here's an archived message:

How high is considered high iron content?

I get mine directly from The factory that produces it  - shreds & pellets - is there somewhere I could have it tested ? What is the level of iron that is bad?

thank you

Re: Iron

The horse only needs about 45 ppm. 500 ppm is considered directly toxic.
