Unless your horse easily eats any untasty thing, I would wean them onto the mineral supplement and the phytoquench by giving only a 1/4 or 1/2 of the amount you plan to give at first for about 4 days to a week then gradually increase it. My horses did not like the phytoquench and refused to eat when I just suddenly added the full scoop.

According to the Carroll and Huntington equation, he is 1028 lbs.  He's been on this hay always.

He looked like a good weight in his September photos. Use a weight tape or our equation (files) to estimate his weight and take it from there.  How long has he been on the current hay? Was he transitioned slowly? The fiber fractions aren't horrible but any hay change should be treated like a diet change. It isn't necessarily the flax. You don't have to taper the Equioxx. Just stop it. You shouldn't be riding him on Equioxx. Use as much carrier as it takes to get him to eat his supplements but if it is a pound or more subtract that from his hay ration. You can introduce them all at once and mix them together except for the liquid E. That needs to be added separately. I like to get a 5 cc syringe in a case with a cap and tape that to the side of the bottle.

The directions I've seen for the amount of hay to feed is based on 1.5% of current weight or 2% of ideal weight, whichever is higher.  How does one determine the numerical value of the ideal weight?  When I ask my vet(s) what his ideal weight should be, they start describing body score, not a weight in pounds.

I will be posting new lab results of ACTH, glucose and insulin, drawn yesterday before he had his fall vaccines.  I did progress to ride him at the trot for ~20 minutes this week, no soreness that I can tell.

Dr. Kellon made recommendations for his mineral balancing, and based on his recent hay analysis, the protein in his hay is low, but the sugar/starch is below 10% and doesn't need to be soaked,  (but we'll see what his labs show).  He has had atypically softer stools and manure "streaks" between his butt cheeks for approximately 2 weeks, and I thought it might be due to adding flax, so I've been holding it this week.

My next steps are to replace his Equioxx with Phyto-Quench (per Dr. Kellon's rec.), to introduce protein, vitamins, minerals, omega-3, and to substitute his small Strategy allotment with a safe carrier.
I'm not sure
  • how much hay he should be getting (does he need to lose weight?)
  • if I should taper his Equioxx (has been on 1 pill/day x ~ 6 wks)
  • specific amounts to give him of an alternative carrier (leaning towards TC Naturals Timothy Balance Cubes or Stabul -1 to eliminate need to R-S-R beet pulp)
  • per Dr. Kellon's recommendations, I will be instituting: Uckele liquid E-pint, Uckele VM, Uckele Phyto-Quench, and The Plant Protein, flax and salt.  Can these all be mixed together ahead of time to be given by barn staff?  Would it be best to introduce them one at a time?
Onward!  Thank you for your help
