Safe anti inflammatories

Chris Hanson

Hi,
my horse Woody is still sore from a trim, he is hard to get boots that fit and I’m still working on that.

He has one front foot more assymtrical and since I’ve been trying to get him comfortable in a boot he’s injured the opposite hind, the other hind not looking great, and opposite front is now very swollen—hoping some of this is stocking up but since he’s been holding everything together with this foot it’s really likely this leg is injured.

So far on the tested, soaked hay, and Timothy cubes he seems fairly stable starch wise. I’m posting this here though because he is prone to ulcers and know that bute is contraindicated for our guys. Woody is IR/Cushings and seemed to have gotten through the rise pretty well with an increased dose.

What anti-inflammatory can I use besides bute?

Hi Chris,
Devil’s Claw is what we recommend most frequently.  If you search the messages, you may find a number of sources.  The one I use is Uckele’s PhytoQuench pellets with Devils Claw.  Take care not to purchase a DC product containing yucca as yucca is inappropriate for IR horses.

Hi Martha,
thanks! I do have that product from Uckele. Woody seemed to really like it, then he stopped eating it. Uckele said they had to go to a different source for one of the ingredients around the time my horse stopped eating it.

If it’s mixed with a ton of pellets he’ll eat it, but he’s gone from wolfing it down to leaving it in the pan.

Oh, dear.  I think I might have heard that from others as well.  Mine were a little hard to get started on it but they eat it fine with some soaked balance cubes.  You can purchase just the DC and I know there’s been some discussion on that here but you’d have to do a message search to find just what you’re looking for.  This link will get you started.

I found some Devils Claw, powdered and with percentage of the active ingredient stated. One of the posts in the link shows the dosage.

This swelling Woody has is very big. This is the leg he compensates with and I’m very concerned about his suspensory with all this swelling (his temp is good). Does Devils Claw work for something like this?

Chris,

Devil's Claw helps with pain and inflammation but not actual tissue damage. If you have an injury you should consider Tendon EQ https://www.uckele.com/tendon-eq.html . If you don't know what's going on, get an ultrasound done.

The swelling is resolved. The quick version is various attempts at hoof boots with abrasions to heel bulbs caused scratches.

Woody is still healing and sore though much less.

I have a new bucket of PhytoQuench with DC that at one time he was very enthusiastic about but last summer one of the ingredients (per Uckele) was obtained from a different source. Those batches have to be hidden in lots of pellets and eventually he will eat it.

Because I ran out of the PQ/DC while Woody was very uncomfortable I gave him DC, human grade, from a local market. His old enthusiasm for DC was reactivated immediately. This was not an economical route to Devils Claw though.

I tried the link to the liquid Devils Claw earlier but they were out of stock. In case I can’t get Woody to eat the current batch of PQ/DC can anyone else suggest a source that is not as expensive as the one from our local market?

thanks!

And Amazon has a good DC that is quite reasonably priced.
