Where you get answers - The ECIR Group Volunteers

Nancy C

Edited

2022 has been a big year for the ECIR Group. Our international outreach and membership is increasing; our daily posts have also increased by about 15%. The ECIR Group has a lot of new and transitioning members and we welcome them. It’s hard work, worrying about the horse in your care, learning what you need to do, and potentially getting many new horse management skills on board.

Today I wanted to take a moment to introduce new volunteers for the Support Team and Board of Directors. These dedicated women work hard behind the scenes to keep things going for the welfare all our equines.

Each of us on the Support Team has been approved by Dr. Kellon to respond daily. A lot of time goes into making sure the answers are the very best they can be. We often spend hours -- weekly, daily -- researching answers for individual needs.

Dr. Kellon is actively involved with volunteers and cases on a daily basis. In the end, each of us defers to Dr. Kellon for final input and correction, if needed. You can confidently rely on answers you get from the Support Team. You can identify each of them by their signature.

Today we welcome four new members to the Support Team: Joy in CA, Lesley in UK, Kim in SC and Cindy M in AR. In addition to her Primary Response duties, Bobbie D will be helping out on ECHorsekeeping as a Mod.

The ECIR Group Inc. nonprofit is blessed to have a working Board of Directors who almost daily help to advance the mission of the organization, devoted to equine welfare and research. We are a 100% volunteer organization.

In 2022, we expanded the Directorate from five to eight members and welcomed Sherry M., Ulrike P., and Jodie J. Directors are voted in for a two-year term. Business meetings take place the fourth Tuesday of every month. Our Annual Meeting, which reviews the past fiscal year, takes place in November. The public is welcome to the Annual Meeting. If you’d like to attend, drop me a note by 11.18.22, and we will arrange to have you as our guest.

To ECIR Group Members, thank you so much for what you do every day for the equines in your care.

What you do keeps us going.

I see that as a 501(c)3 charitable organization you accept donations.  I also wasn’t familiar with the group’s origin from Robin Siskel; is she still a co-owner with Dr. Kellon?

And a great big thank you. There is another "Cushings" eqiune group on FB. Lots of newbies asking questions. I reply by saying "Join ECIR"   I feel guilty, maybe I should not do this. I have realized for months the overwhelming task on our beloved volunteers is increasing  and it seems to have created a bit of tension, just a little bit more snarky responses when being vilified. Everybody please be kind.

You answered your own question, Patty!  We are a 501(c)3 recognized by the IRS. We are required to report to them annually. We need officers -- President, VP, Treasurer and Secretary. We have an annual fundraising event around Giving Tuesday, ECIR gratefully receives donations from members and Benefactors. Since 2011, we have also run five NO Laminitis! Conferences, our single largest fundraiser.

These funds support the organization goals for outreach and research. Over the years ECIR has used these funds to support continuing outreach via our website, films, publishing research, conducting in-house studies, promoting the proceedings and the work of Drs. Kellon, Bowker, Gustafson and more. Lots more coming about this critical area shortly. We hope this next year will bring ECIR to a new level.

We don't have a payroll, but we need our Treasurer. After doing the job since 2011, and taking the group to the IRS to be approved for 501(c)3 status, I am thrilled that Jodie has stepped up to take the reins.  She is very competent and will make our organization stronger.

Thanks for the question.

PS. About Robin.  I think of her often.

Robin was the amazing founder of the original discussion group. She had had a discussion group on another forum and moved to Yahoo when that looked more viable. No one was looking at Equine "Cushings". No one. Robin and Dr Kellon were members on a very high level performance horse group, and overtime Robin recruited a Dr Kellon to join the ECIR Group in 2002. When life handed her a bad hand and she had to leave the group, Robin turned the Yahoo ownership over to Dr Kellon.

You can read all about these events and all of Robin's writings in the archives. Here's one of her first, if not the first. Note the message number. https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/11

We now have 285,000 messages in the archives.

Too punchy to find Dr K's first post (she changed her email address years ago, and I have to go digging) but here's a really early reference (2000) about her work, focusing on magnesium. https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/622

Personal note: Magnesium work/writing in 2000 is how I found Dr Kellon and started following her recs for my foundered Morgan.

Thank you EVERYONE!  I’ve gotten more in the last month from this group than I have benefited from any vet or farrier in the last 6 years.  My horse is recovering from his latest bout very well, and I hope by following your advice it will have been his last bout.  Wish I had this input before I even considered buying a Welsh Cob/Arabian cross, but he gave me 12 fabulous years so NO complaining!!

Thank you,
Nancy

So appreciate this look as how this group accomplishes all that you do and with the knowledge you willingly share. I have only been able to attend one conference but from that I found the best trimmers I have ever met, expanded my limited knowledge and just breathed a sigh of relief to be with like minded people.  Immense gratitude to this group-

Each of you are GEMS! You can't put a price on your horse's life. i have my boy because of all of you and I've gone to "college" for horse care with each of you as my professors! It's impossible to say thank you for all of that!
