Please comment on supplements: do they make sense?

Hi Karin,
I think you either misread or misunderstood my directions.  We can’t open the ODF file and it needs to be saved as a DOC file or a PDF file, which is the option we ask for.  I’m not sure how Lavinia was able to read it unless she has one of the programs installed that reads those files.  Most of us don’t.

Karin on my OpenOffice the option to choose is not a "save as" it is in a slightly different place (I have an old version & hardly ever use it anymore) so look around - it may read "transport as" & choose PDF.

When you are in the open document look in the file menu for a "save as" option or "save as pdf" . When it brings up the box for the file name and type, use the drop down menu to look for pdf if it doesn't say pdf.  All Open Office/Libre Office programs have that option. If you still can't figure it out, use  Help.

Martha,
I went back to the "save as" function and used the ODF format as you suggested. I was not given a PDF option. Perhaps that wasn't included in my original software? If so I haven't paid to add PDF capability. I hope the ODF format is helpful.

Kirsten,

You are right about the abscess signaling ACTH issues. Turns out that because of shipping issues Inky missed doses of pergolide and his ACTH shot up to 45. He is now on a regular schedule of pergolide again and the ACTH went down to 19. The trainer hadn't told me any of this until I found out about the 45 reading.

If I can figure out how to update the case history properly I will do so. I thought I was doing it correctly but some members told me no, it didn't work, and they gave me further instructions.

Hi Karin,

As has already been mentioned, without a hay analysis, there is no way to tell whether the current supplementation is good or not.

Based on the lab results from 8/2022, Inky's ACTH (45.6pg/ml) is not adequately controlled on the dose of pergolide he was on at that time. His ACTH was only going to be climbing up further from that point, as the seasonal rise wasn't in full swing by then.

Even more problematic is that his insulin was 312.85uIU. That is hugely elevated and says that the current feeding regimen is NOT appropriate for him.  Being regularly exercised may be the only thing that is keeping him from having obvious, full-blown laminitis, although there is damage being done to his lamina at the cellular level.

Hi Karin,
Open Office and Apache Office save their word processing documents to .odf (Open Document Format) by default.  When you go back into the programs, you should have the option to save the document as a .doc file or, better yet, .pdf file, which is what we ask that you post, in the interest of general compatibility.  While I generally use a Mac, I have used the other two to help others but I don’t recall any difficulty generating pdf files.

Hi Karin,

I cannot open your Case History file, it's an uncommon file type.  But I want to add that an abscess in September would have me testing ACTH.  Could be coincidental, but could also be a warning sign of uncontrolled or inadequately controlled PPID.

Its impossible to say what your horses needs are without a hay analysis. Minerals are based on what the forage is lacking or has too much of. I have a horse that was constantly getting abscesses until I balanced his diet and not one since. If it were my horse I would ask the leaser to get on board with that. The alfalfa may be causing issues too.

Thank you to all the volunteers who generously give of your time and knowledge!

My horse is free leased and while I updated the case history I don't have details on the supplements/feed, i.e. amounts. The lessor doesn't analyze the hay and instead has been supplementing free-range round bale hay and double rinsed beet pulp (Midwest Agri, no molassas):

Soaked alfalfa pellets (Blue Seal)
spirolina
jherb
Mad Barn Amino Trace + (ration balancer) https://madbarn.com/product/aminotrace/
Magnechrome https://madbarn.com/feeds/magnechrome-mad-barn/
Optimum (gastric support) https://blog.biostarus.com/gastric-support-in-a-multivitamin-mineral-optimum-gi/
Pentosan (IM for joint support)

The horse has been much more active being free-leased than with being under my care. I couldn't ride him for a couple of years because he would buck and crow hop with me. Now he has tweens WTC him in lessons on the flat and with low-jumps. He looks good. (BTW I had done the protocol years ago of administering ulcer medicine to see if it made any difference in the bucking and crow-hopping: it didn't. Inky did seem to have back issues back then).

In September he developed a hoof abscess, which has since healed.

With the information provided, is it possible to comment on whether the lessor's supplementation seem reasonable? . She has been managing the horse for two years, and has been adding supplements until she reached the current combination.
