Shedding

Reta Heaslip

I understand if your horse is on pergolide then chastetreeberry is not recommended for shedding out due to possible interference (diminishing the effectiveness of pergolide).  Are there other supplements or therapies (ie blue light therapy) recommended to help horses shed their winter coats or minimize coat growth? Is clipping the ideal method of dealing with this issue?

Blue light therapy has been tested but not with exciting results. There were "lighter hair weights" but no mention of how significant the change was or comments on hair length https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34656964/ .

Clipping is definitely the best way to deal with it.

I think none of these horses was being treated with pergolide, unless I missed this part?
It would be a worry to think people might use the blue light treatment to 'treat' PPID.

I read a bit on that equilume blue light therapy, but it just seemed really intense with having the light shining in one eye for extended period of time.  Couldn't it also interfere with hormones?

Reta, there’s no need to dread body clipping. As long as you’re flexible and willing to give it a little time, you may find your horse actually likes it. That was my experience. You’ll find good threads at ECIR Horsekeeping.
