L-Carnitine- Alcar
Shera Felde
Thank you both! I ordered AAKG and acetyl-l-carnitine thinking about preventing winter laminitis, and then i started to get confused:)

Nancy just brought up another use for L-carnitine. When on Invokana and losing glucose, the body must metabolize fats effectively. L-carnitine is needed to carry fatty acid liberated from triglycerides into the mitochondria to be burned. It's not a fix by itself for high triglycerides but can help.

ALCAR (acetyl-l-carnitine is a metabolite of L-carnitine. When you feed either one the body will do the interconversions to some extent but if you feed L-carnitine you will end up with more L-carnitine and vice versa.

OK, Shera. I am still learning too.
I believe L-Carnitine is recommended for Invokana horses where triglycerides are an issue. Your vet needs to be on board with Dr K. Acytel_L-Carntine is most often used here for neuropathic pain in winter laminitis and general neuropathy. Dr Kellon, please correct me if I don't have this right. -- Nancy C in NH ECIR Moderator 2003 ECIR Group Inc. President 2021-2022 HOW TO SEARCH THE ARCHIVES: https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/wiki/1993 |

Shera Felde
Thanks, Nancy. I seem to recall Dr. Kellon distinguishing between the two for different purposes (maybe I have the names wrong?)
