Warning: I went to the Equus article to give it a low rating and when I clicked on only 1 smiley face, it highlighted 4. I went back to correct it, but it wouldn't let me.

when I tried to leave a low rating- it automatically gave it a higher rating and wouldn't allow me to change it.
I am very disappointed in the article, as it goes against everything I have read on the subject.

Thank you Dr. Kellon for providing actual science. Seems the last 3 yrs has allowed people to publish articles not based on actual science in both the animal and human world.

Wanted to offer this experience when rating the article: On my iPhone, when I clicked the far left smiley face, it highlighted this singular choice in red for perhaps 2 seconds. I believe this indicated my vote was recorded correctly.

Further observation: Since yesterday, the total smiley faces have gone from 5 to 4 to now, 3.

Confusing system, but I recommend we keep at this.

Thank you Dr Kellon for the careful research I know you did to write your response.

When I saw the article that headlined Vit E as preventing PPID I was, like Dr. Kellon, outraged! However having read the other article written in Equus  I am slightly less angry. Is it true that....

"PPID is the result of oxidative damage to the brain. “What starts it all is oxidative injury to the brain. Nerve cells from the hypothalamus send signals to the pars intermedia. Oxidative injury kills those nerve cells off, and when that happens the cells in the pars intermedia are no longer inhibited and they begin secreting too much hormone. If we can minimize oxidative injury, this would help."

This was written by  Janice E. Kritchevsky, VMD, MS,  professor at Purdue who has been studying PPID in horses for many years.  I would have hoped it is indeed true, which would suggest that diminishing the oxidative damage to the brain would indeed lower the risk of developing PPID. This is the premise on which the whole idea rests. If it's true then I don't understand why giving Vitamin E in the necessary dose couldn't help to minimise risk of later developing PPID. Or are other more influential things contributing to the development of PPID?

I am just trying to grasp the concept. I hate it when headlines 'shout' like this as they mislead people. SO please can someone explain?! Many thakns.

Hi Rosalind

Did you read Dr Kellon's blog about this article? She outlines the issues very succinctly.

Nancy, I think what happens in that rating system is the over all rating of the article is represented there.  I clicked on 1 smilley face and it took it down to 3.5 faces.  The more people who click 1 should take it down quite a bit.

For me, Rosalind, the worry with articles like this is that some people could misinterpret it to mean that Vit E, in itself, can  prevent Cushings. How many of us would love not to have to treat with pergolide, for example?
Just my thoughts.

My husband gave me subscription to Equus a few years ago. I never renewed. Most of the articles were written by people with very limited knowledge of horses, laughably so. It doesn’t surprise me they would have another high-school project, baseless article, written by people who troll the internet for content.

About 25 years ago, one of the community colleges in my area offered horse care and horsemanship classes to the public. The classes were conducted by professionals and veterinarians and were quite good. Included lecture and field work. I remember attending one class with a veterinarian who point blank said the following." Don't buy supplements because the Moorman said you need them. His job is to sell supplements And for heaven's sake, don't get your veterinary advice from Practical Horseman or any of the horse rags out there, they don't know what they are talking about. They want to sell magazines and advertisements.".

I haven't read or looked at any horse magazine in years, other than my breed journal I used to have a subscription to Horse Journal when Dr. Kellon was a contributor and posted field trial articles in it. Then it went in a different direction and she left and so did I.

I'm not sure how to give it a low rating. All the faces have smiles on them and the first two are yellow, the second three are gray. A trick for us so results don't tally?

I think it records your vote and then shows the average. Right now the average is at 1.5, down from 4.

Hi Dr. K.
I sent this message to the main publisher of Equus.

Dear Shelley,
What an irresponsible and very misleading article in your November 17, newsletter concerning Vit E being able to "prevent" PPID.  There is absolutely NO evidence of this and, while it is good to suggest supplementing Vit E for horses who are mostly fed dry hay, Vit E DOES NOT prevent or decrease the risk of PPID and the words that "
We always suggest vitamin E if we are trying to lower the risk of PPID." are just stupid to print.
And, at the end of the article, when it  states "
In a way, PPID is a good problem to have because it means that your horse has lived to an old age" is even more upsetting to read.   NOT ONLY OLD HORSES GET PPID!  My horse was only 14 when she first showed signs... hardly "old age."  And now that I have two horses with PPID, I would certainly not call it a "GOOD THING."  It is an extremely expensive disease and leads to all kinds of other unwanted, sometimes debilitating complications.
Whenever you want to post/print something concerning PPID, you should check with the ECIR website and Dr. Eleanor Kellon... the world's leading authority re: PPID.

I am a long time subscriber to your magazine and usually find it to be informative and correct.  I hope it will continue that way.
Linda Lanzoni

Hope it helps!
Linda
