Pain Management
Hi all.
Ongoing laminitis case. 7YO mare Morgan x Pedal bone 2mm from breaking through the sole. 11° sinking 10° rotation. Vet put on Bute with ample supply for coming months. Not interested in any other pain management. And said I can give whatever herbs I like as they won't really do anything. I have tried to transition to devils claw instead, but presenting very sore, sad and slightly colicky. Any advice appreciated. Already on emergency diet and has been for 7 weeks. -- Steph Mid north SA 2022 |

Hi Steph,
Is this Meg? Sorry she is still having problems. Did you see the Welcome letter from Cindy after your first message? It is here, and is well worth saving,as it is chock full of useful information. https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/284235 Meg's case history would help us provide appropriate advice to help your girl. -- Lorna in Eastern Ontario 2002 |

Steph,
To stop the pain you need to find the cause (usually EMS or PPID) and control it, get the trim optimized and hoof protection. Bute is counterproductive and does a poor job anyway. At this point there is a very good chance there are abscesses/collections that need to drain and that won't happen as long as the bute is on board. Bute for that long is also toxic. We can help you with all these things when we get the details. -- Eleanor in PA www.drkellon.com |

P.S. Giving omeprazole with bute worsens intestinal complications https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32697849/ . Bute also damages the kidneys and can cause bladder inflammation with bleeding.

Hi.sorry for late reply. I couldnt find how to reply or read responses on mobile.
. Yes it is Meg I have tried to find how to make a case to no avail. I have removed everything I can to find the cause. Which I still believe was toxicity cause. I have ordered herbs via a herb nutritionist. Just changed shoe package so she is currently much more comfortable but did have to go back onto Bute for a few days while I wait for herbs. Tried on devils claw o ly and she got to the stage where she was barely waiting and didn't want to get up to poo or drink -- Steph Mid north SA 2022 |

Hi Steph,
Can you tell us where you get stuck making a case history? What steps can you not get beyond? Can you work from a PC instead of your phone? Some people find a phone is not the easiest device to work from. Hang in. -- Lorna in Eastern Ontario 2002 |

I know it’s not like NSAIDs long-term use. When choosing a pain relief, isn’t banamine slightly preferred over Bute in these areas?
