Use of Ertugliflozin

Thank you, Dr Kellon. I thought their observations about triglycerides were interesting and am looking forward to reading yours and Dr Gustafson’s paper. A few vets here are starting to prescribe ertugliflozin instead of metformin but without much instruction to owners on monitoring or diet considerations, which is a bit of a worry.

I've been in contact with Dr. Sundra. Her experience is basically the same as ours with canagliflozin. Dr. Gustafson and I have a paper under review on the elevated triglycerides aspect.

Yes, we have been following horses on cabergoline and ertugliflozin for a little over 3 years now. There are several things to be on the look out for but I want to make sure that information gets in the hands of the treating vets because they often don't hear about it from researchers.

Hi Tori,
Yes, this class of drugs is gaining more traction for horses whose insulin can't be controlled by diet changes alone or diet changes with the addition of metformin.  It's more costly and requires more attention than the other options so it's not something we recommend until it's obvious the other options aren't working.

Dr. Kellon asks that you put your vet in touch with her directly by sharing email addresses.  She can advise your vet on the particulars.  She has done some related studies but it's hard to say in terms of long term effects because its use in horses is relatively new.  I think she is well tuned in to the relevant biochemistry and can share with you and your vet what side effects you might note.

You can also search the messages on that topic here.

I am seeing more and more reference to this new drug and I was wondering have any studies been done by the ECIR Group?
Have the long term affects been monitored and what is needed to be aware of if the horse is on it?
Thank you so much.
