Arthritis Treatment

If flexion tests and nerve blocks are conclusive, no need to do the films. lntra -articular blocks would be best. These can sometimes paradoxically make the horse worse but that is considered a positive too.

Thank you, Dr K... I will talk to my vet about it.

Dr Kellon, so this presumably means the vet needs to do a joint radiograph to find where the arthritis is occurring? That is, if knee arthritis is a problem, not much point injecting fetlocks. Or can it be done based on flexion/nerve block/palpation results?

This is injected directly into the joint. How quickly it works depends on the pathology in the joint and how much the horse is worked but results can be seen from as soon as 1 day to 2 weeks and may continue to improve for up to 4 to 6 weeks. It is readily available as Arthramid.

Linda,

You can buy the injections but probably need a vet script for it.

Wow!  That is really exciting news, Dr. Kellon.
Is it readily available?  Does it take time to take effect?  I just got a refill of my Equioxx but I would love to switch Midnight over to this.
Should it overlap or should I just stop the Equioxx and start Polyacrylamide hydrogel?

Polyacrylamide hydrogel is the up and coming arthritis treatment. It looks like the real thing. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36273533/
