Any referrals for low sugar hay in Southern California?
Kathy Hurd Hollister
I'm wintering in Ventura County with my IR mare. She is super sensitive to sugars in hay and I am needing to find hay with 5-6% ESC+Starch in Ventura County, California.
I can only store about 2 months worth of hay. Originally I had found some Teff but know it is coming from a different supplier and now is way too high in sugar. Anyone in this area have any luck finding low sugar hay? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. -- Kathy-Joined 5-/2016 Mia Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Kathy%20and%20Mia Boulder County, Colorado |

And I am looking for a new source in N Cal as my current supplier is having major issues.
Why don't more brokers test their hay? This gets so stressful! -- Linda in Grass Valley, CA 2020 Midnight and Ostara https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Linda%20Midnight%20OStara |

Flying S Hay Sales in Redwood Valley (a few hours from Grass Valley) tests their hay and distributes all over California. You might call Jim at (707) 485-8156. He’s amazing. He works with a huge hay grower and tests a lot. He can tell you what field each stack of hay came from and show you test results for that same field for several cuttings and years prior. He’s really interested in climate change and how it’s effecting hay growing. He seems to really enjoy the science behind it all. And he’s super organized with binders of hay tests going back for 3 years
Thanks to whomever connected me with him

I live in Mendocino County and Flying S delivers to my house!!! I have been using them for years and yes, they do always test all their hay, but they use the 601 test, so could be off a bit. I always do a 603 test when I get my delivery and have always been really close to their analysis except for my July delivery this year, when his was around 8% ESC & Starch and my test came in right at 10%, which un-nerved me a bit. I have been feeding it with no apparent problems, as I couldn't deal with soaking as having knee problems myself.

Ferne,
Jim gave me and Equianalytical permission to run the 603 test on his sample. I just paid for it. -- Terri Jennings with Mr. Beefy, Finn, Elliott and Teeny (over the rainbow) Arcata, CA https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Terri%20and%20Mr.%20Beefy,%20Finn,%20Elliott%20and%20Teeny https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=258266 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=261227 Joined 2019 |
