j-herb and boot questions; tiko now barefoot and sore.

Daisy Shepherd

tiko now barefoot x 24 hours.  his feet grow slowly and has thin soles' should i try j-herb.  what is the dosing and best source for j-herb. my farrier has agreed to come  every 2 to 4 weeks to trim and reassess. he is sore, started keratex hoof hardner  yesterday( have used in past ) and will continue. put cavallo boots size 5  on today on front. taped up hinds with foam and duct tape for today.  probably may need different boots; his feet are longer ( toe too long )  than wide.  thank you lavinia for the markups and your help;  i will get all photos posted when my computer helper is available.  any suggestion for boots greatly appreciated.  thank all of you for your help, daisy, tiko, whisper

Hi Daisy,

2 - given that Tiko's toes have been consistently too long and his sole thin it's not surprising he's sore out of shoes.  You will need to measure him for boots and then see what's available that fits his feet but be prepared to go through several different sizes as his feet become the size that they should be.  Facebook has several used hoof boot groups to buy/sell/trade boots.  You can also do styrofoam and duct tape if needed if you can't find boots to fit.

3 - IME drying out the hoof with Keratex isn't going to be a long term solution but your mileage may vary on that.

I wouldn't start the Jiaogulan until your trim has the toes back where they belong and you have a schedule in place to keep them there.

Hi Daisy
It's great Tiko is looking less sore. Can you boot him for the harder surfaces and let him have some barefoot time on the soft footing? My horses have been barefoot their whole lives, but I still boot them to ride, because their living area is softer than our trails.
