Safe vegetables to feed

Hello where can I find a list of safe vegetables to feed.

Christine,what purpose do you want the vegetables to serve? Do you mean for a treat? Or maybe to add to bucket feed? Or....?

My horse loves cut up celery for treats. I usually cut up half of a bunch and put it in his mineral pan or I mix the cut up pieces in his hay (non bagged hay). As far as watermelon, it's only the rinds that are OK for our horses.

I’m trying to find something he will eat besides hay because I need a way to get salt and minerals into him.

Will he eat anything dampened? Such as soy hull pellets?

Or damp hay? With the salt and minerals sprinkled onto the hay?

Unfortunately no.. he won’t eat any pellets. I have tried many different types of pellets wet and dry even adding in a handful of whole oats( which he eats and picks out amazingly!) but as soon as I add any type of salt or minerals he just walks away. If I sprinkle it on his hayb he will leave that hay. He has been checked for ulcers twice in the last 6 months(which is as long as I’ve owned him) and we are treating him a second time.But the eating habits never improved. Also had his teeth checked 3x so far. I am at a loss how to get this under control. and it’s not easy here in Portugal because everyone thinks I’m crazy they’ve never even heard of insulin resistance!

Hi Christine. It is an uphill climb when everyone around you has no concept of the IR diagnosis. Its hard, but that is why we are here :) I did find a list of some vegetables you could try, BUT depending on how much of the minerals you are feeding, it still may overwhelm the very small safe amounts of the vegetables. Dr. Kellon wrote this piece really for folks who were having trouble not feeding "treats'" ...I know you are looking for vegetables, but within her article, she discusses other safe options. So, I thought you might find it helpful... Have you tried unmolassed beet pulp? Not sure if you can get it in Portugal....
The other thing people have tried, is the chaff leftover from the bottom of a bag of carrier or hay chaff....of course, add the minerals to it very slowly---Literally a pinch or even one or 2 grains...and see what happens. Hi if you saw in my CH we have tried all types of char chopped and pelleted feeds available including beet pulp and speedy beet. He reufuses everything but hay and even that is difficult to get him to eat. He is not too skinny but Is getting zero minerals salt and vitamins other than what is in his hay. The hay is Rye grass and I am looking for a lab to do the sugar and starch test. But even with that he refused to eat the soaked hay for 2 days and then coliced. not sure I can mAke any changes other than hoping that some vegetables can help at least a little. There is no wAy I will get him to eat any type of minerals unless I can get them as a paste and force it in daily. Hi Christine,
I don't see a list of things in your CH which you have tried for him,except beet pulp.So I'll ask if you have tried soy hull pellets? They are popular with many horses.They do need to be dampened,in my opinion,just to be sure to avoid choke.But just dampened and stirred,is all. And it takes only a minute or so before feeding. They are a favourite with cattle people so may be found where cattle farmers buy their feed. -- Lorna in Eastern Ontario 2002 |

Hi Christine,
It takes awhile to acclimate to the salt so I began by sprinkling it on the hay. You won’t know what minerals need to be added until the hay is tested so there’s no need to worry about them yet. -- Martha in Vermont

Hi Lorna
I don’t know where to add the list of things I have already tried on the case history there was only room for a big pump and a section that said other grains and pellets to which I put that he refuses at all. Where can I make notes about what I have already tried? Basically won’t eat anything other than grass , hay(very picky) carrots(which he doesn’t get) I bring him half a sweet potato or beet or cucumber in the evenings just as a reward. Should I stay away from this too? I guess for now I will just leave him need the dry hay and not worry about it. Hi Christine,
I can't help with adding items. I thought that the rows could be expanded to allow more information to be added, but it is maybe more complicated than that. Sorry. But what you could do is add the information to your comments at bottom of page. My question still stands about soy hull pellets,though. Speaking of your comments,I notice that he is being ridden but is unsound. If he were here,I would wait until he was sound before riding him. Have you tried giving him a break to see if that makes any difference? Are you sure there are no mechanical hoof issues? I did not see a " list" of safe veggies for IR/ cushings horses. I would very much like to know. I did try Celery...was a DEFINATE Nooooo!

He is not unsound due to his hooves( rest assured I am a retired equine physio therapist and. Equine podiatrist) It could be a dental issue as His teeth were in bad shape but there is only so much that can be done at one time and the Vet/ dentist is on top of it. I have not tried soy pellets I don’t know if we can get them here and also he will not eat anything that is in pellets or soaked mash so that would not be helpful unfortunately right now I think I am doomed with the feeding until we can identify if it is coming from his teeth or not. https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Chanceler’s%20case%20history |

This is indeed frustrating. You have obviously gone above and beyond to get to the bottom of the problem,especially with your specialization in equine body issues. Please don't be cross if I return to something I suggested earlier. One is to try to find soy hull pellets,since they are safe and have not been tried. Cattle farmers use them,so if your equine feed store doesn't carry them,maybe a place selling cattle feed will. They are not hard like alfalfa pellets,but soft enough that just a sprinkle of water will cause them to start breaking down. So you could experiment with how little water to use in order for it not to be mushier than he likes. I only use a sprinkle of water because I worry about choke. But maybe unless a pony bolts his food it isn't an issue. And many of us know that sometimes there's just no 'splaining what makes a pony decide what is poisonous and what isn't. From one day to next. And the second thing....please bear with me....is the idea of mechanical issues with his hooves. I am not a podiatrist,but to me his front feet look out of balance. Slightly. And those of us who have had hoof issues( 5 of my then - 9 horses lost all of their hooves years ago)know how even a very small change in trim can make a world of difference. Hi Christine,
What a handsome horse! His hooves have come a long way under your care and it's clear they are meticulously cared for. I did notice in the xrays though that his LF HPA is quite broken back, whereas the RF is fairly nicely aligned, and perhaps this could be contributing to his gait abnormality. The broken back angle can be quite painful so for exercise, I'd try to elevate that heel with a wedge to reduce stress on the soft tissues in the hoof and lower limb. Lorna thank you for all your concern and yes you are correct his feet are out of balance I have only on him for seven months now and I took over his healthcare when I could not find a qualified person here which was the end of July. he has made tremendous progress since then I did not post any before pictures but I can!
I guess it couldn’t hurt to try the soy pellets I will look for them and thank you for being persuasive! I’m just so tired of spending money on stuff I have to give away. Wish I could find a daily dosing mineral paste!
