Safe Prascend Carrier: Elk Grove Milling Stable Mix?

Jensmccabe

Hi all -

I don’t see Elk Grove Milling Stable Mix on the safe feeds list so am assuming it’s not safe but can anyone confirm/comment?

Last weekend, I moved my herd of 3 to our own private (us only) small barn and created a true dry lot with bluestone and millings. I can ensure no grass access and feed weighed hay in slow feed nets - Yay!

But with the stress of the move/transition, Bella is refusing her Pergolide again (she gets 3mg/day compounded by Wedgwood in a pill).

When this happened previously, I tried all the methods folks mentioned but what *had* worked best for her was just the pill in a tiny amount of alfalfa pellets as a carrier (she doesn’t get footy on alfalfa, although my IR gelding Odin does).

Now she’s turning down even the alfalfa as well as Stabul 1 with pill in it in a feed bucket. When I ask her nicely to please take her pill, for the last 3 days she’s been eating it out of my hand in the midst of a few alfalfa pellets, but I have to travel 1.22-1.27. We tested the same method with my mom this morning and the ask doesn’t seem to transfer well 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️.

While I’m gone, Bella (and rest of my herd) will be fed by our new barn helper Becca, so I’d like to try any sort of small amount of safe treat feed and see if we can’t get her on track to eat it in a bucket. In the past, she has liked Elk Grove, thus the ask.

Bella absolutely will not accept an oral syringe of any kind so that’s out, but I’m open to suggestion otherwise!

The regular stable mix, no. Stable Mix Lite is Teff, alfalfa and rice bran with canola oil.  ESC + starch might be OK (would have to test) but the alfalfa makes some horses sore and it's heavy on omega-6 fats. Maybe as a treat while you are away but I wouldn't continue it.

Put the prascend pill in a gel capsule so she doesn't taste it. I order mine off Amazon (size 1). Has worked great. No refusal. They eat it with any carrier as they dont taste it.

Thanks Anna! We did try that when I was using Prascend pills but neither of my EMS horses would eat it consistently…

Now they’re both on a compounded Pergolide so it’s in a gel capsule, and ironically this seems to work most of the time (pretty sure we’re just seeing the stress of the move).
