Pergolide/Prascend sources and costs

Kirsten Rasmussen

Frances, if I remember correctly, 1mg compounded pergolide is about 30% of the cost of 1mg Prascend at Island Pharmacy, including S+H.  As the dose increases, the cost goes up incrementally, unlike Prascend.  Now I'm paying just under 300 Can$ (~200US$) for 90, 8mg capsules.  So their 8mg capsules cost about 3x what their 1mg capsules cost.   I've had the potency tested at the 90-day mark and it was at the very upper end of spec.  Never had a problem with getting it on time either.

Hi Frances,
I think the only way to determine the difference in cost would be for your vet to send a prescription to the compounding pharmacy of your choice and see what the bill is.  If I were using the doses you are, I’m not sure I’d change but the higher the dose is, the greater the savings is by going to compounded.

I pay about $325.00 plus sales tax for 160 tabs of Prascend. Find that it is very convenient and no problems with my vet for RX refills. However I wonder about convenience as opposed to going to compounded pergolide and having issues with vets and or deliveries. I.m thinking of Island Pharm in BC Canada just right next door to Wa. Mare is on 2 tabs Prascend a day, gelding on 1 tab per day. This calculates out to about $2,225.00 annually. Wow maybe I should buy stock in BI. Anyone have any ideas what it would cost if I went to compounded pergolide?

I had an RX for Prascend with Chewy back in 2021 but was notified that it was discontinued.  My previous vet told me at the time that Boehringer was trying to direct all product through veterinary offices.  Apparently it was just the package size that I had previously been buying that was discontinued because I see it on Chewy now.  I’ve been overpaying for the last 1+ year!!!

Thank you,
Nancy

I'm with Lorna, I started my Arab, Velvet, on compounded pergolide around 2007 or 2008 and then when Magic needed it, I just went with the same.  Never any issues with either horse.  Magic was on 7mg when he died recently...

I have my mare up to 2mg, will retest soon but my compounded RX is for 1.5 but since I bumped her up during the rise and wasn’t sure we’d stay there I filled both my compounded prescription and prascend that way I don’t have to get a new RX for the short term (I hope) bump. I get capsules in the compounded so I can’t divide them. My old little mare was well controlled on 1mg , I wish I’d gone to compounded then it would have made things a lot easier on our wallet.

Nancy, many of us have always used only compouned pergolide. I had 7 boys on it years ago, some of whom lived to be in their mid thirties and forties. I could never have helped them with BI's product.

My vet charges less than that, and chewy.com charges even less although  your vet will need to approve it with them.

Yes, many people go to compounded. You don't have to increase the dose as long as the prescription is written correctly - i.e. x mg of pergolide as pergolide mesylate.

My 24 year old gelding has been good on 1mg for 6 years now.  I see from many posts that older horses can require 20mg or more.  If the horse reaches this stage, do people generally give Prascend or switch to a compound pharmacy?  If compound, would the dose be adjusted higher from the Prascend pill dose?  Boehringer has restricted sales to vets only it seems.  My pills are around $3.50 each now, which would be $70/day at 20mg.  I can’t imagine that is affordable for anyone.
