Advise on newest X-rays

Kirsten Rasmussen

Hi Lisa,

Just my general impressions: heels should not be lowered on either hoof and toes can come back horizontally a bit more.
I'm not qualified to really say more, and I don't think our hoof guru can get markups to you by your next trim date.

After your next trim, consider taking a full round of hoof photos (as shown here) and putting in a request.

Hello again,

Kirsten, thank you for your reply!

I added hoof photos to the photo album today. I hope they are adequate, it is absolutely FREEZING here today, cooperation and patience on everyone's part including Nira was pretty low. :/  Could I please get some input on her trim? Farrier is coming in one week. If these photos need to be redone I could try again on Saturday when it is supposed to be above zero again.

Thank you!

Hi Lisa,

It is so great to hear things are going well!  Kudos to you for everything you've done!

I think her May radiographs actually looked better (if you ignore the gas pockets in her hoof wall).  It appears to me that her heels are being lowered too much now, causing a broken-back HPA (hoof-pastern axis), which should be straight.  Her heels have also gotten underrun since then, maybe as a result of lowering them too much.  She has some sinking but it's a 'normal' amount for horses, even ones that haven't had laminitis.

Others might add some more comments here but if you're looking for detailed feedback I recommend taking a full round of hoof photos again, and asking for markups for your trimmer to follow.

Good afternoon,

It has been one year since Nira developed laminitis and was subsequently diagnosed IR and PPID (through TRH stim testing). I have been MIA since July, but things have gone pretty smoothly since then. I have done everything I could to manage her diet, medications, hoof trims and environment with dry lot, hoof boots, leg wraps, etc. She is doing well and is very active and energetic in her lot.

I had new x-rays done last week and asked the vet to mark her hooves before taking them. I have posted the x-rays to her photo album. She was trimmed about a week before the x-rays were taken.

I would like input please. To me things look better. I am not sure if there is sinking? I think we are ready to start working on a more formal exercise program. Does the trim need modification? Other thoughts?

Thank you all again for your help and guidance! Without you we would have been lost!
