AAKG confusion

Jennifer Murphy

I've spent a good deal of time reading old messages regarding AAKG and Jiaogulan use for suspected winter laminitis and have completely confused myself.  I've read of instances where it was used and actually made matters worse, and horses improved once AAKG was removed from the mix.  I've read that it can worsen inflammation.  I've read the wiki file about AAKG.  I'm very concerned that I might make matters worse, so can anyone help me with the following questions?

- How do I know if the situation warrants AAKG + jiaogulan?  (how to tell if this is winter laminitis or an actual laminitic event)
- If the combination seems to be helping, can AAKG be given more than once per day?
- Are there any concerns with using this combination if the animal is on an SGLT2 drug?
- Are there other drugs that might work in conjunction with these two to improve winter laminitis, and drugs that should be avoided? ie: can I add ALCAR into this mix?
- How long is it safe to keep an animal on AAKG + jiaogulan?  Do most people only use it in winter?

Thank you in advance!

Hi Jennifer. Those are great questions!  Not sure what sections of the files you have read but here's one to review https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/files/Pain%20Medication%20and%20Alternatives/Jiaogulan,%20Nitric%20Oxide%20Support,%20AAKG%20and%20Supps/Jiaogulan,%20when%20to%20try%20it%20and%20what%20to%20expect.pdf

I have Dolly on AAKG and J-herb. This is our first winter using it...and I have to say it has been very helpful. I plan to stop it when the temps are greater than 50 degrees consistently....I chose 50 because that is when she starts to be painful is at 50. Other horses are painful at 40 or 45 or less.

The SGLT2 question- we'll need Dr Kellon on that one because that drug is specific and not sure how it combines with other drugs/adaptogens.

How much of the AAKG are you giving? How much of the J-herb are you giving and are you finding a time when you have an empty stomach to administer it? ( I find that piece a challenge sometimes....when that occurs I double the dosing because food does interfere with absorption. ) I'll keep poking about to see if I can answer your other questions. --

Thank you, Trisha!

Flea is about 420 lbs, so I'm dosing him at 1/2 tsp AAKG 1xdaily, 2 tsp alcar 2xdaily, and 1 1/2 tbsp jiaogulan 2xdaily.  Last night was his second dose of AAKG and fourth dose of alcar.  Jherb has been daily for since September.  I noticed he was able to stand for longer periods and he's bending his knee finally.  He's still struggling, but I see a glimmer of improvement and don't want to compromise him in any way.  The only way I can get him to eat supplements is mixed in his mash, so maybe I need to increase the doses.

His insulin values.  Anything above 80 uIU / ml has the potential to be acute laminitis, but some horses don't show signs of it until insulin is even higher.  80 is just the minimum that was seen in a study of acutely laminitic ponies.

Kirsten, that is a great explanation, thank you!  A lot of things discussed go over my head, so something simple like that is much easier to understand.
