Acetyl l carnitine
Hello
My friend's horse is 34 treated for Cushing's and has no teeth. He gets stabul1, beet pulp, and timothy balance cubes. She has complete control of his diet everything is a wet mush he is also on a dry lot with no grass. He has been very stiff in his front legs for many years now. She has worked with her vet and treated for lyme. They have also tried previcoxx which the owner felt he didn't feel well taking it (idk). She has been giving joint supplements which haven't helped much. She has also been trying compounded pentosan im injections. He is old and quite possibly its as good as it gets. In a last ditch effort I have ordered the acetyl l carnitine to try. He could have really bad arthritis for sure but I was thinking possibly foot pain or neuropathy. How long will it be before we see results if the acetyl l carnitine will work? Thanks -- Thanks so much for your time Annie, Malik, and Iggy December, 2015 |

Usually within 2 weeks for the ALCar and neuropathic pain. I would consider ultramicronized PEA https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7552276/ , 2500 mg once a day https://www.elevationterpenes.com/collections/pea .

Hi Annie,
Is his PPID being well controlled? Is his trim tight? Both will impact his comfort levels. -- Lavinia, George Too, Calvin (PPID) and Dinky (PPID/IR) Nappi, George and Dante Over the Bridge Jan 05, RI Moderator ECIR |

Thank you Dr. Kellon this is so helpful can't wait to try it! Hi Lavinia you have actually seen this old guy at our farm many years ago. You were very helpful with getting the owner to understand what her horse needed. She does work with her vet on the ppid but who knows. She does use compounded powder etc ugh she is aware of the need not to expose to air etc. Just looking to try some nutracuetical or something new we haven't done before. You were very helpful Lavinia coming out to our farm and getting her on the right track we so appreciated your passion for the welfare of our horse's.

for the PEA how many teaspoons and/or tablespoons (or whatever measurement) would I need to give to get the 2500 mg?

If I recall correctly from the package. ( i ran out and don't have one handy) 1tsp = 1200mg. So you would need a little over 2tsp for 2500mg. I can attest it does help, but is expensive.

Hi Annie,
I was wondering if it was the same horse. Glad to hear he is still around. -- Lavinia, George Too, Calvin (PPID) and Dinky (PPID/IR) Nappi, George and Dante Over the Bridge Jan 05, RI Moderator ECIR |

You are amazing lol. I just finally had time to write back. FOUR days after starting some ALCAR I had on hand we had a positive response! The old guy came running in and scared the crap out of me I was worried he was going to fall on me lol. No more shuffle puss. The early huge improvements are up and down now. I was wondering if we should try the PEA to see how that would work or just stick with the ALCAR. -- Thanks so much for your time Annie, Malik, and Iggy December, 2015 |

Very glad to hear it. It may be he's overdoing it at times and paying for it the next day. You can use PEA too.
