Aloe vera as a supplement carrier

Linda A <ojaildy@...>

We did but that source is now gone...no, as we only buy about 15-20 bales alfalfa and orchard at a time...giving Euckele U Balance...

Question:

since giving Euckele minerals, wouldn't feeding the TC 30 or TC Lite overdo on minerals if giving both?

Hi, LInda - Some of the minerals may be a tad more than needed in this case; but since you are feeding older as well as growing horses, you won't be feeding the TC 30 to the older horses, who won't need the extra protein boost; and the extra minerals and proteins  fed to the growing horses will be fine. This is NOT as good as actually analyzing the hay and having a specific mineral supplement balanced to the hay, but it is much, much better than tossing a little Farrier's Formula (or similar) to each horse and hoping for the best.

You won't go far wrong by feeding the hay; plus 2,000 IU vitamin E (with soy oil in capsules, which will be listed in the ingredients on the bottle); plus Omega Horseshine; plus salt; plus the Uckele U-balance; and for the youngsters. some TC 30.  As a carrier to get the salt, minerals etc in, use either  soy hulls, rinsed/soaked/rinsed beet pulp, Ontario Dehy Timothy Balance Cubes, Nuzu Stabul 1, or LMF Low NSC (don't need them all, just one or a convenient combo),  and a snifter of TC Lite or TC 30 for flavouring. Just don't give TC 30 to the older horses; only the growing ones will need the extra protein, minerals and vitamins over and above the Uckele U Balance.

Does that make sense?

Hi Linda,

I think I know where the confusion is. A) Omega Horseshine IS mostly ground flax. B) Flax seed is 40% fat, so you interpreted (or read or thought) that this fat could act as a carrier for absorption of powdered Vitamin E. C) I believe the moderators are saying that the fat contained in flax is not enough of a carrier for vitamin E absorption D) Either the oil already present in Vitamin E capsules (I buy from costco) or a splash of pure oil fed with powdered Vitamin E is required. E) If your horse is highly suspicious and won’t eat the Vit E capsules you can poke a hole and squeeze them out into the feed.

Hope I’m not repeating something you’ve already figured out.

Thanks! Ok, so if interpreting this correctly I'm ok feeding omega Horseshine with the Vitamin E capsules I buy from costco👍🏻I don't feed the powder. Thank u again!

Great, thanks so much! Just feeding TC 30 to the 3 yr old . Think will go back to the Mtn Sunrise Timothy pellets for the carrier with a bit of water as they all are eating the minerals well....even plain out of my hand!👍🏻Sure wish I could send for hay test every time I buy but that's nearly impossible.

Something just learned today if can't test hay...anyone ever muscle test and then balance minerals to those results?

Muscle tests and hair tests won't give you the information you need for diet adjustment; liver biopsy might, but that seems rather extreme (to say the least). Can you contact your local agriculture extension office, and get an average hay analysis for your region?

PS - the next post about muscle testing refers to diagnosing PSSM, not figuring out mineral status.

Are you talking about applied kinesiology muscle testing?  It's totally bogus.

What about camelina oil? Just saw something for Equine Omega Gold. Is this comparable to using olive oil or flax oil for vitamin E absorption and adding omega 3's?

For those of you buying your Vitamin E from Costco, if you are buying their Kirkland brand, check the label.  I've checked a few times, and they contain glycerin, not oil.  I have purchased the Nature Made brand at Costco, which do contain soy oil.

Flax oil has an omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acid ratio of 4.2 to 1.  Camelina oil has a 3:6 ratio of 1.4 to 1.   One ounce  of flax oil will provide 14.9  grams of omega 3;  1 ounce of camelina oil will provide 7.3 grams.

It is an okay product, but it seems like a waste of money to me. Either use Cocasoya oil, olive oil, or flaxseed oil (I prefer using the flax, myself)
