Joker's IR is now being controlled with steglatro and he has fully returned to work with no laminitic issues. Right now we are dealing with a high up sacroiliac strain most likely. I want to be prepared to have a discussion about appropriate meds and rehabilitation plan for Joker before his lameness evaluation. Most likely my sports medicine vet will want to put him on bute or dexamethasone. Is there a problem with him going on either of these? Is there a different anti-inflammatory that would be safer for him to be on?

No. Human work has shown mixing SGLT2 inhibitors and NSAIDs increases the risk of kidney damage.

Can topical surpass be used? What is the reason for no dex? Is it due to his IR in general or related to the steglatro? Just trying to get all info to discuss with my vet.

Dexamethasone can worsen IR to the point of causing laminitis. Topical Surpass won't work for SI.

Can the devil's claw actually be as effective at reducing inflammation and controlling pain as bute or does it help, but not as strong as bute?
Can devil's claw also cause liver or kidney damage? I have had Joker on the phytoquench before and it was really difficult to get him to eat it. I have also given him devil's claw in capsules, which worked well. I would probably give him the capsules. The pills I can get say "1 serving size is 2000mg from 500mg of 4:1 extract".
