devils claw and prevacox
majestic, PP ID, gets 57 mg of precacox each day and I just realized I am also giving a supplement that has 3000 mg of devils claw. So, is that an error? Find a supplement without the devils claw? Thank you

It's overkill and could contribute to toxicity . Contrary to popular belief, Previcox is NOT for long term daily use.

Hi Alice
Lots of info about this over the years in the archives and files. Basically it has all the same potential issues as any NSAID https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/243485 See also last file in this informative list from a File search on NSAIDS https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/filessearch?p=name%2C%2C%2C100%2C1%2C0%2C0&q=NSAID As a side benefit to helping with pain in a correctly trimmed foot, Jiaogulan can help protect against gastric ulcers. https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/126391 -- Nancy C in NH ECIR Moderator 2003 ECIR Group Inc. I started majestic on poly glycon IV. It is off label but I needed something like pentosan. adequan etc. etc. and I chose this product by my vets suggestion. So, I wonder if that additional benefit would be enough to stop the Preva cox. Knowing Preva cox is not intended for long-term use,r besides overkill, I assume there are no contraindications between using prevacox and devils claw? doesnt one prevent the other from working?

There is the potential for Previcox and DC to compete for active sites. This could lead to increased toxicity. Long term NSAIDs should be absolutely the last ditch effort to keep a horse comfortable because of the organ damage they do.
Also consider the newest joint treatment, polyacrylamide hydrogels https://www.oarsijournal.com/article/S1063-4584(16)30189-3/fulltext . -- Eleanor in PA www.drkellon.com |

The issues are kidney and colon damage. These may well not be symptomatic until something else comes along to tip the balance - e.g. a colic with dehydration leading to full blown kidney failure. Previcox (firocoxib) causes less damage short term than phenylbutazone but it is still there even short term https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30094858/ . The package insert clearly states:
Dosage and Administration: Always provide the Client Information Sheet with the prescription. The recommended dosage of EQUIOXX (firocoxib) for oral administration in horses is 0.045 mg/lb (0.1 mg/kg) of body weight once daily for up to 14 days. In target animal safety studies, toxicity was seen at the recommended dose when the duration of treatment exceeded 30 days -- Eleanor in PA www.drkellon.com |

so, I am going to take majestic off of prevacox. can someone suggest a schedule? I was thinking every other day for how many days? 1 week? And that should that be enough? Or what I want to go down to every two days? Thank you

thanks for the reply. I would like to taper based on a once a day visit. I could for example have the barn manager give Preva cox 7 AM, and I can give it 4 PM. on other dsys But if I can make it easy I would like to base the taper on a 2:30 PM approximate time

LJ,
You don't have to be that precise on times. These drugs remain bound to the tissues longer than their blood levels stays up. -- Eleanor in PA www.drkellon.com |

Thank you Dr. Kellon. I will discuss with my vet and see if another treatment would be appropriate. Knowledge is always mobing forward

During the taper, can DC be administered or only after the firacoxib is stopped altogether?

I would finish the taper first.

I started my taper today at the prevacox. Instead of alternating full dose between days, I decided to give a half dose for maybe a week? And then should I alternate the half dose for several days? Or can I stop after the half dose of seven days? Thank you

I made a similar decision years ago, LJ, when I knew even less than I do now. I told my vet it would be much easier for me to keep track of things if I split the dose in half, rather than doubling the interval. The vet didn’t disagree, apparently not knowing the difference either. Nothing bad happened but now I know why it isn’t recommended to do that. When you decrease the dose from effective to non effective, you are effectively stopping it cold turkey. When you increase the interval, the horse gets a full effective dose but less frequently. The relief will be there but just less often and the horse will learn to adapt. What I’ve seen recommended here is to decrease the dose to the standard operating dose (if you’re above it) and then double the interval every 3-4 days. -- Martha in Vermont

Start the Devil's Claw half way through that half dose week then just stop the Equioxx at the end of the week. BTW, Previcox is the name of the canine drug and the generic name for both is firocoxib.

I think I could use a further clarification. So starting tomorrow, I will skip my 57 mg dose. And then give it the following day. An alternate like that. How long do I alternate with skipping the dose each day? And after I’m done with that, am I correct I will not bother with alternating a half dose every day and just stop?

Alternate for four doses total then stop completely. Start your alternative at the same time you start alternate day dosing.
